    Most of my bad caps

Since about March 2010 I have saved most of the caps I replaced.
Not all were bad, some were beside others that were bad, as I generally do a complete recap. I'm sure a few are missing.
Lots of Capxon GFs in there.

Nice collection! Yeah Samxon GF are horrible! I'll have to post a picture of my bag, it's got a lot too. Mostly CapXon, Teapo

My first choice in quality Japanese electrolytics is Nippon Chemi-Con, which has been in business since 1931... the quality of electronics is dependent on the quality of the electrolytics.

          Yes. Exactly.
I used to be able to function on little sleep, but now that I'm old, my brain just quits working.

I can never be bothered hanging on to junk or failed caps. They make good fireworks. Of late, though, it's just been mostly Teapo caps I've had to replace, with the odd OST and Chemi-con KZG.
I love putting bad caps and flat batteries in fire and watching them explode!!

No wonder it doesn't work! You installed the jumper wires backwards

The ones with the bulgy tops always turn me on
                        ....
Most of mine are collected in a small container as well. Actually, I have 3 containers: 1 for (visibly) failed caps and Rulycon only , 1 for "okay" caps (i.e. not bulging), and 1 for good cap brands that I've pulled from various broken hardware. Like Phaihn, I have lots of caps from Xbox 360s as well. Most of the ones in my "failed" container are *surprise, surprise* .... CapXon. The ones in the "okay" container are usually re-used either for temporary fixing/testing or various breadboard projects.

Re: Most of my bad caps

About 90% of my components collection comes from old circuit boards that I have collected over the years. Most of them go into two plastic tackle boxes with 2" x 1.5" compartments. I'm hoping to get a large desktop storage unit with small drawers to replace the boxes, but of course that takes away the ability to move things around easily (the tackle boxes are portable).

There was a time that I collected old disposable cameras for the capacitors. WalMart was a great contributor--once they removed the film from the cameras, all they'd do is throw them away, so I'd walk out of the store with three grocery bags full of used disposable cameras. I built a large capacitor bank with the 300v 120uF caps and used it for projects with exploding wire and coilguns. Unfortunately, the voltage that built up between them was so high that it arced across and destroyed the caps. After that I didn't bother collecting any more. But for those of you who like collecting caps like those, Walmart's a great place to start! Just make sure yours still has the photo development booth.

Well at least it's useful in one aspect

Yeah, sometimes I can be staring straight at the obvious and yet somehow I will miss it. That's why I like this forum. It has everything, from the general information that you can find elsewhere on the web to very very specific stuff.
Well said. Forums have really helped me a lot over the past several years. Not to mention, all the people I've met. Absolutely awesome.

With our generation, if it's not on the web, then it doesn't exist and you cannot learn it
That may be true, but when I was growing up internet didn't exist. I'd have to go out and learn things on my own. I guess I still have a knack for it

I know I've been a little scarce lately (like the last 2-3 years), but I'm still here and still doing my thing with fixing PSUs.

For today's considerations, I have a Seasonic B12 BC-550 [A551bcafh] 550 Watt ATX power supply for you (click on links for full size images).

It's a modern ATX unit with fixed (non-modular) cables and an 80-plus bronze certificate. Here's the label:

Normally, I never post repairs this quick after I do them, because… I am usually very slow. But today, I’m making an exception here. Why? No idea. Perhaps only because the repair details are still “fresh” in my head… which is ironic, given this is a 16 year old monitor that hardly anyone will care about today. It is new to me, though. I picked it up last November from someone on my local Craigslist. It wasn’t very close to where I live, but was close to a family friend that I had to go visit anyways. So after watching the posting on Craigslist for a few weeks and seeing it getting...

                                          Heathkit IO-4205 Power Supply Caps

                                          Hello,

First, I am a complete noob with high voltage stuff. I'm learning, but I need help by someone looking over my shoulder.

I recently came into posession of a Heathkit IO-4205 5MHz Dual Trace Oscilloscope. The documentation is copyright 1978. I'm told it works.

I opened it up to check the caps before I applied power, and found the following black caps and wanted to know what they were. They are on the power supply board. I was able to read the name and model and came up with, "Nytronics 162J-1, 0.1uF, 20% tolerance, 2000VDC."
                                          ...

Identifying caps on an old Zoom 9000

                                          Hello!

I have two projects on my work bench. One is a friends dead JBL Xtreme speaker with a blown voltage regulator and corresponding bulged and shorted cap. That cap has clear markings so I know what replacement I need for it.

The other project however is a whole different deal. It's a Zoom 9000 guitar effect from the 90th that has developed a devil hound howl when there is no input from the guitar. I'm guessing caps problem. So, since I don't really use this effect anymore I thought it would be a perfect project to learn on.

I have studied the board and...

Help with switching power supply caps

I'm trying to repair two old VCRs, they both have bad caps. One has leaky ones, the other would barely run until I subbed in some caps from another power supply I had laying around (though they are the wrong values). This vcr works for an hour or two, but then the power supply starts whining and the picture gets lines in it. I didn't replace all the secondary caps, so another voltage might still be problematic, or the values I used are too far off.
I've been on mouser and digikey but the options are a bit overwhelming. I just need some new ones that will work. They don't need to be top quality,...
