I'm planning on ordering a replacement cap tomorrow for my optiplex gx270 but theres a few things I would like to get straightened out if someone were to be so kind.
First I need to figure out which way the cap is supposed to go in
I was poking around google the other day and read where someone mentioned that it might be easier to basically force the cap out then desolder the leads one at a time. So,thinking that was a good idea at the time I went ahead pulled it out so I could more easily read the manufacturer without having to hunt down my flash light. Now I'm confused as to which way it goes in.The faq states that the negative lead on the cap is indicated by a stripe which is to be mated to the white hemisphere on the board but, since I'm a total boob,I didn't take note of the orientation and as I understand it,these can be printed anyway wrong so obviously I need to make sure it gets installed properly.
I uploaded a pic of my board for reference.
Also,I'm kind of curious as to whether my board actually had the over filled caps or if it's just my psu because aside from the smaller caps(R inside of a square?) they're all rubycon mcz and the only cap that has ANY signs of stress is by the graphics card. This pc only has like a 250w power supply and I have quite a few, most likely way too many peripherals in use and on top of that,I mainly play games,on a pny geforce 6200.If I had the money and thought there was a better psu available,I would have bought already but I'm not so sure because it's not your average power supply. This is the small form factor, the psu is tiny.
3.I've never used a grounding strap/grounded iron and never had any problems but then again,I've never replaced components on a pc mobo. The iron I plan on using has the third ground prong that plugs into the wall socket,do I still need a grounded tip/strap?
In the faq it says "The best place to connect the wrist strap is to the back of a computer which is plugged in",which I don't quite understand....Am I supposed to be soldering the cap while the power cable is plugged in?
I would greatly appreciate any help whatsoever. It is/was my baby and miss my gmod
