Apple has filed for a patent to integrate ads into the OS itself. These ads not only will be annoying and permanently on, but can disable the operating system to make you pay attention and require user input to ensure the user is watching.

I think they'll release OS-X at low cost or free for the PC. The only catch will be the apple ads you'll have to endure.

The sad part is that if this were to happen, a lot of people will not only not be bothered by it, but will fail to see what is so horrendously wrong about advertisements being shoved in their face by the OS ITSELF.

I don't know about this 'not many'. I would be damn annoyed!! Especially if I have to pay for the advertising (aka. it is not free)!

I guess it will keep the hackers busy for a while.

if ads became part of the OS on my Mac, it would be thrown in the trash after being severely assaulted with a large mallet. Apple knows better than this, I mean after all, google is the spam OS, not OSX!

That sounds the most likely. Then to get rid of the ads (and maybe enable more features) you buy the full version. That would be a pretty good strategy if they decide to break into the ...er... "non-Apple hardware" market.

2 words, fedora core (for ppc). or xubuntu (for ppc). those will work on it.

This isn't meant as a Linux bash, but most distros seem to have really crappy PPC support.

Fedora 11 doesn't even finish booting to the installer on my G5, something crashes before it even loads X. It gets a bit further on my Ibook, but the screen resolution is screwed up like usual and the installer doesn't work.

Ubuntu is pretty bad too, they forgot the hard drive drivers in one of their PPC releases. That's not poor QA, that's NO QA. They also broke the previously working video drivers on my Ibook. No version past 7.04 works properly and it's a pretty standard ATI card.

For what it's worth I am running Ubuntu 9.04 on my G5 and it works great.

TC: You don't have to worry about adds in OSX on your G5. It's a G5, you won't get new features from Apple.

9.04 is not for ppc. i thought they dropped support, except for xubuntu. ubuntu ppc support is news to me.

Ubuntu in any form is not officially supported on PPC since 6.10.

9.04 is the first release of any Linux distro that has worked pretty much flawlessly on my G5. Even "supported" distros like Fedora always had issues, but 11 is the first one that broke so spectacularly. Other releases could be made to work, but it's not nearly as easy as on x86.

Before anyone says my G5 is broken, all the BSDs work perfectly. OSX runs as well as can be expected on such a machine. Slow, but everything works.
