Viewsonic va2026w turns on for 2 seconds then powers down

This monitor is a couple years old at least, maybe older. When I hit the power button, it comes on normally and will display normally for 1 or 2 seconds, then goes black and the power LED turns off. When the room is dark, the computer on, and I shine a flashlight at the screen after powering it on, I do NOT see anything.

I disassembled the monitor and examined the boards. Pictures are below. All the capacitors on the board are Samxon or Su'scon. Now, I have never replaced a capacitor in my life, but from the tutorials I've read and Youtube howtos I've watched, it looks like the largest Samxon capacitor (not the big blue one) has blown. The top of it is bulged out. Is this consistent with the symptoms I've described? Also, what's all that white stuff on a couple of the capacitors? A guy at Radio Shack told me it was fluid from inside the capacitors, but I'm not convinced he knew what he was talking about. He also told me I need to replace the little black things with the copper-colored coils on them. What are they and do I need to replace them?

I've spent several hours reading through these forums trying to figure out where to go from here, and I have to admit, I'm pretty overwhelmed. I think I could figure out soldering, but where I'm stuck is figuring out which capacitors to replace and what to replace them with. I've read several threads describing this, but this stuff is way over my head. Electrolytic ESR microfarads ripple volts... I'm completely lost. I don't know anything about electricity or what any of this means. The tutorials I've read say I don't have to match the specifications exactly, and that sometimes slightly different specifications are better, but how do I know?

Here's what I can tell you about the capacitors. On the larger board (this one has the power plug on it):
    Big blue capacitor: Su'scon 120 uF 450v
largest green capacitor to the left of the big heat sink: Samxon 1000uF 25v (this one looks blown)
two green capacitors to the left of previous: Samxon 470uF 25v
largest black capacitor to the left of the big heat sink: Su'scon 1000uF 10v
    black capacitor above previous: Su'scon 470uF 10v
two black capacitors to the right of the big heat sink: Su'scon 47uF 25v
On the smaller board (this one has the two monitor plugs on it, none of the capacitors appear damaged):
two green capacitors: Samxon 22uF 16v
black capacitor on top right: Su'scon 220uF 16v
black capacitor on top left: Su'scon 100uF 16v
    black capacitor below previous: Su'scon 10uF 25v

So, a summary of my questions: Which ones should I replace? How do I know what to replace them with? What's that white stuff on the capacitors? What are the black things with copper-colored coils that the Radio Shack guy told me to replace, and do I need to replace them? Are bad capacitors even what's wrong with this monitor?

So, a summary of my questions:
    Which ones should I replace?
I would replace them all except for the large 450V cap.
How do I know what to replace them with?
Panasonic FM, FC, or FR seem to are the most recommended around here. The life expectancy, ripple, ect ect are far better than what was originaly put in there.
What's that white stuff on the capacitors?
    Glue
What are the black things with copper-colored coils that the Radio Shack guy told me to replace, and do I need to replace them?
You might have to draw a circle around this on your picture but i am thinking it would be one of your transformers. People that work at radio shack are in a nutshell IDIOTS. Forget anything they have ever said on this subject.
Are bad capacitors even what's wrong with this monitor?
I've repair several with your exact symptom and new caps was all it needed.

Should I replace them with capacitors with identical uF and V ratings?

Yes, a set of dial calipers works best for diameter and height. If you don't have one or access to one a small ruler will work too. Height will be the critical dimension and i've made the mistake of ordering one that was to tall.

If you fancy a bit more reading while you wait for your caps. There is this great guide written by retiredcaps- which is about 2 seconds to black which appears to be your problem.

I would guess that he meant the inductors - small vertical coils? with a board description beginning with L

Hopefully but could be other things - see answer 1 above.

He was right about the first part. Wrong about the 2nd part. You need to replace a capacitor. And you can leave the "blacks things" alone.

Yup, that's exactly right. If you replace that one you are probably good to go.

Replace the Samxon 1000uF 25v. Measure the height, diameter, and lead spacing (distance between the 2 leads on the bottom)

Yes, you have a bad cap. Welcome to badcaps dot net

You can order that cap from digikey. Maybe 75 cents. You also either need to get a friend that can solder. Or maybe practice soldering on an older board. This is a fairly simple repair. Here's a really good soldering tutorial I got from retiredcaps. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I_NU2ruzyc4

+1 for replacing all the secondary caps. That should do the trick for ya ...

Well, I agree. Then he'd still only be spending about $2.25 plus shipping. But definitely replace that bulging Samxon 1000uF 25v Eklinaar

I would at least replace the ones I marked in red.
