Hello, everyone my name is Chris and I'm from Ohio. I'm 51 years old with a high school education and love electronics. I love building computer's and trying to fix them. I am not good at software troubleshooting so I have to research certain things and programs to figure out certain issues. But I am willing to learn and do my own work on anything I set my mind to do. I believe we can fix anything with a little patience and research. So that's why I'm here because I want to learn how to fix motherboards instead of buying new or used components and putting them in a computer. I am full time at the Walmart distribution center, and I help run sound at Sunday church. Sound is a very challenging task, and I have to keep up with research and learning on that also so I'm kind of busy throughout my life, but I manage to find time for family and friends. I am always open to learning new things and I am looking forward into learning and discovering ways to improve my skills. I have built 3 gaming computers, fixed a few smart phones, and fixed 3 laptops. But fixing things on my own is always fun and rewarding.

My name is guyrd. I have been in tech for my entire life, working with computers for as long as I can remember. A big fan of tinkering around and problem solving. I am an anti-consumer so I would prefer to reuse tech until the wheels fall off as opposed to buying new, always. I have only recently got into bios programming, still figuring it out but enjoying it.

When I was working full time, I progressed to more of a sales role from being desktop support. This was mostly just a means to an end, and my heart wasn't really in it. I am now doing my own thing, and enjoying the new adventure.

I am a bit intimidated by soldering but I'll likely get into it sooner rather than later. It's just a bit of a mission getting chips in my remote corner of the world.

I don't like throwing things away that are just a repair/diagnosis away. I tought myself hot-air soldering and reading more complicated schematics and board views around 5 years ago by buying broken macbooks and repairing them.

Hi everyone!

New poster and user here. Can't believe I only just learned about BadCaps while trying to recover a failed BIOS flash. Probably could have helped me with tons of other projects around my home lab.


About me:

Long time avid electronics enthusiast, although no formal training (molecular biologist and bioengineer background, currently a research scientist). I mess around with all things hardware and software, x86 and ARM, digital and analog (lots of vacuum tubes), consoles to custom PCs to Arduino and Raspberry Pi. In my spare time, I do some photo and video editing on my dedicated Mac desktop (Mac Pro modded 5,1) and work A/V production. However, most of my computer fun is gaming (and hacking said games - more fun than playing) on my dedicated Windows PC (Z170 modded 9900K).

Got into computers from my dad, and always had Apple products growing up (and still collect, from my dad's first 1986 Mac SE to my more recent 2018, A1989 MBP). Don't collect Windows/x86 computers much, but I make things work on a budget, so if old hardware can be upgraded, I will make it work somehow.


Current challenge:

Kinda broke my fiance's frankensteined Dell-based PC by trying to mod the BIOS for Coffetime. Told it wasn't going to work (those Reddit users), and probably right as I now can't get it working again even with SPI flashing the original good BIOS backup. Saw some forums on BadCaps regarding Optiplex 3050 BIOS's, so hoping that will help me find a fix.


Other ongoing projects (in no particular order):
- MBP 2017 motherboard and replacing the soldered NAND with iBoff's modded NVMe adapter (and failing)
- Celestron microscope LCD board repair (x2)
- PNI proprietary cartridge RFID lockout reverse-engineering (semi-working)
- Cholorphyll modding some houseplants (not electronics per-say, but uses a lot to make work, plus coding in DNA)


Future projects:
- Repair my DLP printer (resin bed issues)
- Buy an FDM printer (and make a temperature controlled cabinet)
- Finish my attics (not electronics, but do lots of hardware work around the house too --> replaced all the lighting fixtures and sinks already)


Past projects (that I can think of outside of my GitHub):
- Tektronix Type 503 caps and transformer replacement; vacuum tube voltage repair
- ChameleonMini (and similar) RFID programming (mostly MIFARE)
- MagSpoof and magnetic swipe emulation (electromagnet work)
- Lots of SCSI or CF to SD and other mods for my Macs (Mac SE, PowerMac G3, PowerMac G4, MacPro 1,1-->2,1, MacPro 4,1-->5,1)
- PC upgrades (LGA750, LGA1366, LGA1151 - from Xeon testing to BIOS modding)
- Console modding (SNES, Wii, Switch, PS 1/2/3/4/5, GBA, PSP, PS Vita, 3DS)
- Zeiss microscope board repair and custom FL filters
- Syringe-pump setup for microfluidics
