Re: New Members - please post your introductions here

      Hi All,

Grant from London here, originally from Canberra, Australia (who'd have thunk it?)

I'm a long time dabbler in electronics, mostly simple repairs - had a job some time back repairing switch PSUs and clock circuits in old faulty 286s (yes, that long ago) but a lot of my knowledge has faded with the years.

I'm here right now because I've got some Alesis monitor speaker PSUs to fix, but also as bringing my general electronics repair knowledge up to some kind of reasonable level has been a goal of mine for a while now - so I might as well begin to do something about it!

In addition to the day gig as web site architect for a fairly large UK online retail business, I'm a keen musician (piano / synth / keyboard / organ) and writer and producer of music.

Happy to be here and I hope to make some new techy friends

      Cheers
      Grant

        Hi everyone,

I found this forum when I was looking for a solution for the first time because my LED TV isn't working and I don't know what to do.

Anyway, I'm currently learning to be an IT admin and I'm translating in my free time.

Hello. I found this forum while searching for a solution to a blank screen on a LED TV my employer was going to throw out. My electronic skills top out at replacing screens on iPhones, batteries on iPads, and processors on desktops. I'm only somewhat familiar with DC circuits and multimeters are a bit foreign. I'm a jeweler with a penchant for tackling problems that I have no business even attempting. It's fun to tear things apart so if it's already broken why not try to fix it? I've got a couple other electronics projects that I've been sitting on, including fixing an old vacuum tube stereo and building a preamp for some vintage Pioneer headphones. They're piezoelectric driven rather than classic magnet drivers so it should be interesting, to say the least. Maybe I can get some help with those endeavors as well.
          Tristan

Hi all, I'm new to this forum business so I may take a while to get use to it

My name is Rachel and I eke out an existence in Tassie in Australia, studying biology at Uni and playing with electronics in my spare (and "not so spare, you should be studying") time.

I love fixing things and i can't stand throwing things away.

              Hello all.
I've registered on the forum for help and advice on repairing my Toshiba 40kv700b tv.
All of a sudden started switching itself on and now won't switch on at all.
To good to throw away so hoping to find a solution on here.

                  Hello all.
My name is Steve and I am a fix-a-holic. It started when cleaning out my house and I had to decide whether to toss or fix a Kenwood stereo I bought back in high school. I really liked the stereo when it worked so I put $15 down on a schematic off ebay. A few tweaks and adjustments and it now works fine and I became hooked.

I have mostly been a Mac user being in the graphics and photo industry. My first new purchased computer was a Power Mac 8100/80. I fished a broken Color Mac II out of the trash at work and even though it was way outdated at the time I was able to make an ethernet print server out of it for my laser printer.

Lately I have become head master of an orphanage for unwanted and wayward broken computers. Some early orphans to be brought back from the brink are a Lenovo R60 and R61. Over heated motherboards and bad Nvidia 140 graphics were the culprits there. Other machines have been accumulating for creating a Nas4free network storage.

Recently I picked up a Magnavox 37 inch LCD off Craigslist from a guy who tried to fix it but couldnt. Short google work and Badcaps.net gave all sorts of solutions for the power supply so I picked it up and fixed in no time. Addictive! Then I cam across a garage sale post where a guy had a Samsung 40" with remote for $15. I asked the symptoms and they sounded pretty straight forward with what I read here so I drove over with cash in hand and picked up the TV opened it to reveal the popped caps replaced them and its working like a charm.

Another garage sale ad had a Philips 37" 37pfl5322D with remote that looked to be the equivalent of the Magnavox. Asked the symptoms and they checked out with all the symptoms I read here so with cash in hand I picked it up. if it didn't work worse thing is I paid for a dedicated remote that will work with the Magnavox.

This power supply was a little but more involved since it had the chirping sound indicating the diodes need to be replaced. Opened it up the diodes near the smaller transformer were burnt and bad although it seems like most others with this problems it is the set near the larger transformer. But I found some close diode replacements and capacitors and it powers right up.

There is a strange little problem with the TV. There seems to be a quick and temporary image retention going on with the screen.
Turn on and everything is clean and clear. Start changing channels and menus and you will see residual subtle bits of old content on the screen. kinda like it isn't completely clearing out the old image before refreshing. Anyways it eventually turns into a sort of darker contrasty warm colored kinda muddled image. Still searching for a solution to this problem.

Another observation I had was that the LCD screen was noticeably warmer in the upper right corner. I took the inverter out and noticed a mosfet from Alpha to Omega D314 that has a darker colored trace around it than the others on the board. It seems to work fine and it isnt burned the way the diodes were but I'm wondering if I should replace it for the longevity of the set. Assuming I can get the screen image fixed.

So far Badcaps.net has helped me save three TVs from the landfill.

                              My name is John.
                              I am in London.
I have worked with electronics since 1962.
Radio/TV service, then VCR's, DVD and whatever. I go back to the valve (tube) days!.
Worked with computers from the DOS days.
Now use Windows up to 10 and Linux.
Have replace hundreds of capacitors in my lifetime!. Not just electrolytic but the old waxed paper ones that go leaky. You fine them in vintage radios etc.
                              Have an amateur radio licence.
Took Radio/TV service exams decades ago.
Now retired from full time work, but still repairing equipment for my own satisfaction or to help out friends.
You can find me also on other radio/TV technical forums.

Hey, I'm Tim from Christchurch, South Island, New Zealand.

I love to repair things-in-general whenever I can, and have worked as a production-line solderer for several years. My knowledge of electronics itself is very basic though, so at home I'm limited to replacing obviously damaged components. The result is a fairly large too-hard basket!

badcaps.net looks like a great place to share advice and learn

                                        Hello everyone,

I have always been a component-level repair technician. My background is in coin-operated amusement machines (you know, Pac-Man, pinball, etc.). I now publish a technical journal for slot machine repair technicians-Slot Tech Magazine. I teach a class in component-level repair for power supplies and monitors, the two most common failures in the casino. My two heros are Mr. Ralph Todd, my high school electronics teacher from Chatsworth High School and, of course, Nikola Tesla. Only one of them was actually crazy.
