Hi there, I know a reasonable amount about consumer PC hardware and can troubleshoot PCs etc but know nothing of electronics, I google here occasionally to check about PSU quality before buying.

              Hi... My name is Ernie
              I live on a rancho
              I make 5 Peso's a day

              I go see Lucy
              She gives me some _____
She takes my five peso's away

I guess i got a little carried away

Lets see..... my first computer was a CPM system using a Z80 chip and I built it using a soldering iron with a Heath Kit. That was in 1980.

I worked for Univac which became Sperry Rand which became Sperry which became Unisys. I was a field service engineer and traveled all over the world for 30 years chasing navy ships with our computers on them.

After retirement I started a Computer Network Training Company and early in the internet era I started an internet ISP company servicing the western region of the US, headqurtered out of Las Vegas, NV where I live now.

Now I just screw around all day and activly trade the stock market. My friends want me to fix their stuff, hence, why I am here.

Looks like a great site for people like me.

Hello everyone, I'm so glad I found this forum. Although I have not posted anything, I have already found gold with the wealth of info on your site. Most of what I have needed has been covered at one time or another. My name is William Scott, go by Bill. I am a technician in a small computer store in NW Alabama. I started playing with computers in the early 90s and have never looked back. When something is broke, I want it fixed that simple. I absolutely hate throwing silicon in the landfill! I hope to get a chance to talk to some of you in the future if I run into an unsolvable problem, which we all know will happen. :P I'm sure I'll post in the wrong spot from time to time, so please go easy on me! Thanks again for this forum, it's GRRRRRRRRRREAT!

                  Amilo LXL 3220W
it went dead without no standby light. which i had removed its power pack and measure its output voltage to the main picture board and reads normal 5.1/5.2vdc
pls i need tips on what to do next. thanks

                      Hello everyone!
My name is Sean and my grandpa showed me how to solder when I was 10. Just recently I have gotten into it heavily. About two years ago I started to recap Dell SX280s. It has only grown since then. I bought a Weller EC4001ESD from Ebay. I thought it was a good station, but then learned that it was a little under powered. So I just picked up a Xtryonic LF-1600 at 80W. I have been doing more and more. Starting with bad capacitors because it was easy. Now I would like to learn more about all the other components. I have always wanted to. Just never had the time. I have been coming here regularly for help and it is the best resource ever. Very knowledgable and friendly folk on here. Thank you for all the help!

                          hey everyone,

I love these posts. "So many monitors, so little time". Well said!

I'm an electrical engineer by schooling, but been on the software side, mostly working in simulation, process automation, embedded systems, .NET, etc.

Lately I've needed more things to do so I decided to stumble on a broken monitor. Now having read these forums a bit and knowing what a bad cap looked like, and needing a big screen monitor for my .NET addiction, I decided that spending $10 for a few caps was a great way to save $100 -- my old lady is happy cause I can take her out now.

Other things: IT specialist at my house, plumber, carpenter, nurse and chief nose wipe to my kids, car mechanic, etc. Sometimes I get paid for this, sometimes not.

Maybe I can add to the discussions. I know so little but will gladly share it all. Heck, that might take me a good 2 hours.

                          John

I enjoy a challange so I like computer problems. I am sure that it helps me to knw that I am not that smart.

hello - my name is JimMac and I am interested in working on a bad gateway fpd1975w computer monitor. I have it apart - now I am wondering which caps are bad. Are there any visual signs of failure.

I started in the electronics in 1947 and have never lost interest. From vacuum tubes to integrated curcuits its been a fantastic occupation and hobby. Watch out for those defective condensers (capacitors).

Hi! I'm Aaron, a computer plumber and itinerant soldering-iron pusher, and I've just run across Badcaps.net while poking around the net for info on bad caps and recapping -- I found a KLH R5100 surround receiver on the side of the road a couple weeks ago; when I powered it up, it had 60Hz hum and VFD flicker, and when I opened the case I found five bad caps right next to the power-supply transformer.

I've already ordered replacements and plan on recapping the unit tonight; I'll post later on with the results, and add pix of the dead caps to the photo montage thread.

Hello, my name is Sean. I've just collected my MS in EE on the way to PhD, studying in the "already-solved-problem" (according to many digital people) area of analog electronics.

I came across this site in what looks to be the usual way: collecting information prior to recapping a broken device. I'll be ordering parts for my monitor shortly and was pleased to find a couple websites other than Sparkfun that I hadn't heard of before.
