New Here! Trouble with RCA VMT-395 VCR

    Hello there all!
I recently acquired an RCA VMT-395 VCR, it was working quite well for about 3 days until it stopped playing, it would fast forward and rewind but when I press play it would pull up the tape but the tape doesn't move so after a few seconds it shuts down (I guess because it's detecting a jam). So I found that the belts were pretty worn out and slipping on the loading mechanism, so I did some digging and found a belt kit on ebay, after cleaning the pulleys and installing the belts it fast forwards and reminds a lot better and the belts no longer slip on the loading mechanism. However, it still doesn't play, when I looked it appears that the loading mechanism is not pulling the tape up all the way, when I spin it by hand just a little bit the tape begins to play. I will post a link to a video later on. Thank you for any help! (PS it doesn't have an idler tire, it uses gears and all of them are in good shape with no cracking, which goes for the rest of the plastic gears inside the deck)

Check that the two small loading belts on the loading motor are the correct size and that they are not slipping during the tape loading process.

Checked those, both the correct size and not slipping, it looks like it's trying to spin after mostly loading, if I give it that little push by hand it seems to fully engage, but once I disengage it (i.e using reverse or stop) it's back to square one. Thank you for the reply!

Check the grease on the worm gear and also on the tape guide slides, if it looks hard like dry rtv, clean it and re lube the gears and slides. You may also want to clean the mode switch

Gotcha, it does look a little dry, what kind of grease should I use?

We had a black moly grease we used, but a white lithium grease should work fine, or something similar. The mode switch can be removed and opened to clean the contacts, they are likely oxidized. This can cause the motor to stop before it reaches the tape loading end position.

I'll try using a white lithium grease, I have some around the house. I just need to figure out where the mode switch is at.

Attach a picture of the lower mechanism and I will point it out, it should be near the loading motor, black, about 1/2" x 1 1/2 long usually held in with one screw.

Here's a picture I took before replacing the belts, I believe I see it. Here's another picture I kinda got of the loading mechanism on the top with that gray looking grease.

IBM LTO 7 Tape Drive - Dust Sensors??
                    by RetroComputingGrotto
I have a Quantum SuperLoader robotic tape library that uses an IBM LTO 7 tape drive which is constantly complaining that it needs cleaning. If you insert a cleaning tape, it performs the clean and resets the cleaning counter to 0 hours. It should only require cleaning every 50 or so working hours but after as little as just 1 hours use it requests cleaning. We've purchased a new cleaning tape along with new LTO backup tapes but that has not resolved the problem.

I have taken the library apart and can see no noticeable signs of dust inside. I have removed the tape drive from the...

Aiwa Z-R700 Music System has very low power when switched on, dim lighting and nothing works
                    by pecman
I was given an Aiwa Z-R700 from the 1990s era to look at by someone who said the twin tape deck did not work. The whole unit unit powered up ok but there was nothing from the tape deck. I had a look and found all the belts broken, I replaced the belts and then put the tape deck back into place and it still does not work. Also when I now power up the unit all the lighting on the front is very dim and the cd player and the tuner as well as the tape deck do not work. I have checked all the connections and ribbon cables again, there are no burnt or swollen capacitors. Maybe there are capacitors on...

                    Problem

This is an LG edge LED lit LCD Display. The LEDs are on the bottom edge of the display. There are 2 bars (left and right) Each bar has many LEDs and a 6 pin connector. Each pin drive several LEDs thus is the highest current flow / heat junction. The weak lead free solder gradually fails with thermal expansion/contraction cycling and increases resistance. PSU will compensate up to a point, then when the current is too high, PSU just shut down the backlight causing a dark display. I have even seen one which the connector just fell off as solder points became completely detached....

LG 75UN8570AUD panel issue fixed with tape.
                    by triplefour
I've been seeing a lot of the new TVs (samsung and LG only i think) maybe 1-2 years old suffering from sudden panel death and have been over 50% successful bringing them at least most of the way back to functionality if not all the way, with the tape masking of the LVDS pins method.
add this one to the list. the issue was on the left side of the panel and i ended up blocking just 3 pins on the connector that joins the two panel boards that make up the left side of the panel (it has 4 boards total) i didnt get the picture back to 100% perfect. i spent hours fiddling with which pins to block...
