yes, any idea what to replace it with?

Or, is it suggesting a fault somewhere else that caused failure?

That’s a TVS diode and it’s shorted to GND. Remove it and short is gone, but then you have no protection.

Did you verify that you do not have shorted out or open LED's in that strip?
Can we also see the straight shot pictures instead of in the angle?

What's the worst that can happen if I just removed it?

All leds on the strip and all others working ok.

It is for protection, not needed to function.

I am thinking same what budm said. The diode went, because there is a very likely probability that there is something wrong with that LED string first place. See, LED's are current controlled, not voltage controlled.
If you do decide to remove that diode, the short goes away and it should fire up. However, there is no over voltage protection anymore. Probably you will find out that there are some bad LED's on that strip.

Removed that component...not really much of it left to remove.

                        Now the leds will sometimes:-

                        not turn on at all
turn on but go off after a few seconds
                        stay on

                        ...completely at random.

                        All leds illuminate equally.

wouldn't it be better to turn them up to flush out the faulty one?

Sounds like it is time to replace the whole set of the LED strips.

I would but its a very unusual set and can only find them abroad with long delivery times.
