Samsung 58" Plasma TV (FPT5884X/XXA) keeps turning itself off + clicking

    Hello all ~

I picked up this large, 58" plasma set and it has two problems that I need to fix.

    1) POWER SUPPLY ~ TV KEEPS SHUTTING DOWN + REPEATED CLICKING

I can turn it on and it will operate normally and display channels (with the DirecTV signal hooked up through one of the HDMI ports) but it turns itself off after about a minute.

Sometimes it will stay on for two minutes or even three, but it always shuts itself down and then the relays on the Power Supply Board begin to click while the screen is entirely black. It's obviously attempting to turn itself back on, as evidenced by the fact that every once in a while during my testing it will indeed come back and display a picture .... but for only a few seconds before shutting down and the repeated clicking begins again.

I took the back off and visually inspected all of the capacitors and there is no obvious bulging or leaking on any of them. Hopefully, the pictures I posted will convey that. Please let me know if they are clear enough.

I then unhooked all of the connectors coming off of the Power Supply Board to try to isolate the problem. When they are all unhooked, the tv does not turn on at all when plugged in. Then, I hooked up the connector from the Power Supply Board to the Main Board ONLY. This single connection / combination produced the same sequential turn on / shut down after a minute or two / clicking that plagues it just the same when all of the connectors coming off the power supply are active and in play.

So, does this tell me that the problem lies in the Main Board? Or, perhaps the problem is actually on the Power Supply Board itself but that only reveals itself when the connection to the Main Board is made? I think alot of these Samsung sets will not operate at all unless at least the connection to the Main Board or Logic Board is made.

I'm hoping that this is a relatively common problem that others on the forum can help me isolate down to one particular board. And then go from there.

    2) SCREEN PARTIALLY DAMAGED BY SCRATCHES

It also has suffered some rather deep scratches on the screen that I have attempted to take out but with limited success. I used isopropyl alcohol and that helped a bit. Followed that with the use of a rubber eraser, and that helped some more. But, all in all, the scratches are still quite noticeable both with the set turned off and when the picture on the screen does come on during my testing.

Does anyone have any more ideas on how to lessen these scratch marks? I don't expect that I can fully eliminate them, but I'd like to get it to the point where they are negligible.

Thanks, in advance, for your replies.

(Sorry for the various orientations of the photos below. I'm not sure why the site keeps rotating them as a result of the upload process. Can this be fixed by the site administrators?)

I'm currently working on a similar issue with my own Samsung 60" plasma. What I will tell you is that your clicking sounds are not coming from relays, as there are no relays on the power supply boards. That clicking sound is the sound of capacitors charging and discharging rapidly due to a fault. Occasionally the clicking will also be associated with a transistor beginning to short out and arch.

I've replaced my power board on my TV twice now...the first time it failed it had similar symptoms to what you're describing, but eventually that final "click" was actually a "pop" and I saw a blue arch light emit from the TV when it popped. Basically if you have bad capacitors, eventually they will short out and cause a transistor to short, causing a bad arch. Sounds like you haven't reached that point yet, but if you keep using your TV eventually this will happen.

Unfortunately I cannot help with the scratch issue as those are usually irreparable unless you find a replacement LCD/LED screen, which by then you may as well buy a new TV.

Thanks for the immediate help and advice. I much appreciate it.

I am including a picture of the PSU here, with the source of the clicking noise circled in red. Not only am I sure that these two components are making the sound auditorily, but when I place my finger on them they are definitely creating a tactile response.

Are these two, rectangular components not the relay switches? Thought they were, but maybe they are actually capacitors also? Please let me know what you think. Thanks.

yes, they are your p/s relays.

first thing to do is remove the p/s and check all of the solder joints. especially on any fets, transformers and riveted components.

Okay. I will do that next.

If I find several solder joint problems, is it best to resolder them by hand or just bake the PSU in the oven to meld those back together? I have had success with baking 3 Main Boards in the last year in other sets, but have yet to try it with a Power Supply Board. I used 385 degrees for 10-12 minutes before with these other Main Boards in the past.

nooooooooooooo. do not bake a p/s unless you want to watch your lytics go pop.

Okay. Didn't think that the baking of the PSU would be a good idea.

So, if I track down any weak / cracked solder joints and repair them by hand, and it still remains in this "clicking" mode, then can I assume it is likely one or more of the capacitors on the PSU that has gone bad (despite them all being visually okay)?

it could be many things. i'm not the best with plasma's, but i can get you started.
after you have gone over the p/s, check to see if vs and va are matching the panel sticker.

                  Okay. Sounds good.

I will do both of those things in the morning and then will post the results here. Thanks for the help. I know this is a fairly common problem on several brands, and maybe particularly the Samsungs. But, as you said, tracking down the actual problem and source of the resultant clicking is a case by case scenario and could indeed be many things.

Those are not relays. These are Kemmet film capacitors. TRUST ME. Please see below:

Please check out the attachments. Based on your pics I see a component that looks like it should be replaced. But the problem with bad transistors is that the capacitors, diods and resistors surrounding that transistor could also be bad.

Also, the other attachment is of your PS card, which you should replace those capacitors for good measure.

If you have the PSPF701801A/BN44-00183A power supply, then a common failure on this board are the two green thermistors to the left of the relays you marked in photo #3. They are marked either RLQ/RTQ 801S and 802S. They should measure around 10 ohms. Also, looks underneath the board and look for bad solder joints/ overheating around these thermistors.

Check your standby voltage, it should be +5.2 volts, then check the voltage out of ICQ802, it is the +15 volt regulator that drives the relays, I believe it is located near the 2 relays, to measure the +15 volts you must use HOT ground for your negative probe, you can use the tab of the regulator ic itself for ground, then check the voltage at RQ802 (resistor directly behind the relay)
