Sony KDL70R550A dark area

Got this TV back in 2013, it started forming a dark shadow vertically in the middle of the screen (see the attached pic).
Any ideas what this could be?

It looks like bad backlight led, I suspect a couple are shorted keeping the rest of the led's in the string on

Is that fixable? or is a panel replacement needed?

It's fixable but it means disassembly of the panel to get to the LED strip. This can then be replaced or the individual LED replaced.
