    Thanks for the tip! I went down the row testing them, and, sure enough, the fifth transformer from the top (the one right in line with the lamp behind dim spot on the screen) is indeed wide open. The soldering looks big enough that I could probably just replace the individual transformer, so I'll order one of those up and get it installed.

      Might check it for broken wire on pin first.
      I assume no responsibility for any stupid suggestions I might post.

        interesting output pins, but at least you have found the problem.

        i had 5 transformer failures in a row a little while back. at least they are an easy repair.
        WHY CAN'T PHILIPS USE PHILLIPS HEAD SCREWS?

          Fixed!

          The transformer was indeed the problem! Replacements are only $10-12 on eBay, so I picked one up, installed it, and everything is back in operation. That was way easier to diagnose and repair than backlights; I am truly relieved.
