LED current consumption in LED LCD TVs

Is there a way to reduce the number of leds (3 arrays, 7 leds in each in the 32" LG TV I'm working on right now... no backlight) without loosing on lighting and picture quality...? 3 strips of 6 in each for instance? Should I in this case introduce a resistance somewhere in the circuit to assure right current value, in order to protect the new leds?

light will obviously be less .. use diodes in place of missing led.s .. get the ones with same vf as led.s
