    SONY KDL40EX503 - blank screen, green constant power led

    Hi everyone, amazing forum, smart people… this is my first post so be gentle:

    The set is 4.5 yrs old, been kept in decent clean condition and used most days.

    Any guidance as to my next step would be most appreciated.

    Symptoms at moment of failure:
    At moment of failure, screen flashed vertical coloured lines 1cm wide with 1cm gaps then sound “BINK!” then blank screen.
    This only happened once and it was my wife who witnessed it. Can't reproduce it.

    Symptoms now:
    Blank screen (no backlight), no audio – the set feels dead.
    No difference if I plug in different sources.
    BUT
    External power is applied – green power light comes first and stays on consistently.
    Remote command is sensed (green flickers with remote buttons) and remote will turn off set (green to red led.)

    Inside the set: (see pics)
    No smell or evidence of burn.
    When power on, can feel main board chip beneath heatsink warming up – but by no means excessive.

    Main PS fuse good.

    Measured voltages as follows in “on” state (green led showing) and “off” state (red led showing) – exactly the same voltages in both states.

    PS board measurements
    CN 6401 upper right side of PS board (connecting PS to main board) – from top to bottom
    T-CON-ON = 0
    T-CON VCC–12V = 0

    POWER ON = 3.3
    ACOFFDET = 3.3
    STBY3.3V = 3.3

    CN6402 upper left side of PS board, top to bottom (connecting PS to inverter)
    UNREG 24V = 25.7
    UNREG 24V = 25.7
    UNREG 24V = 25.7

    GND = 0
    BL-ERR = 3.3
    BL-ON = 0

    DIMMER = 3.1

    CN6403 upper side of PS board towards the right (connecting PS to tcon board) (reading left to right)
    (in [brackets] below are pins on the board that aren't used by the connector ribbon - as you'll see from the pic)
    [0 REG 12V GND = 0]
    0 TCON 12V GND = 0

    0 TCON VCC 12V = 0

    Thanks for reading.

    Detected Bl error, does the 24v rail start at all ?

      Thanks for your reply - where would i measure the 24v rail starting?
      (i get the same voltages at the points above no matter if the green or red led is showing on the front)

        Re: SONY KDL40EX503 - blank screen, green constant power led

        Disconnect mainboard.
        Connect STBY3.3V to POWER ON using 1K resistor. That should bring up all your other voltages.

        Also connect STBY3.3V to BL_ON using another 1K resistor to check if the backlights come on?
        Willing to help but I'm no expert.

                  Scuse delay - Christmas got in the way! Happy New Year to all.

                  1Ks across points as described above... RESULTS:
                  Backlight = ON. showing up strong through holes in chassis.

                    "T-CON-ON = 0 / 0
                    T-CON VCC–12V = 0 / 0"
                    So the main board is not sending the T-CON on to turn on the power supply to provide 12VDC to run the T-CON board.

                      Thanks for your reply budm, so would this be easily traceable / fixable? - or a case of sourcing a new board? - I have a DMM and reasonable soldering skill. used (tested) board around the £40 / $50 mark.

                      (i'm thinking board)

                      Cheers

                        Re: SONY KDL40EX503 - blank screen, green constant power led

                        Finding a compatible replacement main board is proving very difficult.

                        Might it be a case of finding one close to it then updating firmware (which I've found on the sony eu site)?

                        Here're the board and panel details from the original tv:
                        Board: 1-881-636-23
                        Sticker on board: Y2008850J ; 158661; REV 106; SOFT 4085
                        Panel: LTU400HF02

                        Any assistance hugely appreciated.

                        PS> should i be posting this question as a new thread?

                          Posted new thread with mainboard sourcing query - link

                          Will update this thread when I get a hopefully positive outcome.
