Panasonic TH-50pz80u hdmi not working

I picked this set up last night at a good price.
The TV has picture but the hdmi input don't work. The seller said it was caused by a power surge.
The picture it does have isn't the clearest either, it also doesn't seem to be in HD.
This all sounds like a mainboard issue, does it not?

Yes Mb issue, there is actually a repair video of the 42" version where the Hdmi didnt work and it covers replacing the Hdmi controller.

Thanks reecey but would that account for the poor coaxial image?
The image I uploaded is supposed to be HD. I can't seem to find an option for HD channel.
I,used to have a 42pz80u and I know I received channels in HD.

Hmm maybe, could possibly be something else failing. Maybe run the test patterns ?

Would that involve jumping pads on the logic board? I've never done that but read about it being advised. Once I jump it do I reconnect every board back up?

Lol of course. After taking the mainboard off and looking for location on the logic board and not finding any, I looked in the service manual.
Test patterns are run from the service menu.

You can do it via the SM and remote, will find Tom66's video on it.

I think I accessed the test pattern menu but it just seems to be colored screens.
They look clear. Scrolling white bar, slanted colored panels etc.

Looks like it but without faces or a picture it's hard to tell but it looks fine.
Should I order a board? Tracing the hdmi connectors to that chip, I'll never be able to replace it. Lol.

Price being the same, would you 1) get the existing board repaired or 2) buy a used working board?

Order the board, replacing the Hdmi chip is very hard bud These are nice Tv's otherwise.

There is a repair service on eBay for them.

PZ80 doesnt have DTV-HD! Its an old set by todays standards--before DTV-HD was 'invented' You're stuck with 580i DTV

I bought a PZ80 new--About 9 years ago!

Only way to get HD image--is via HDMI or by comp input...

double check the menu functions! I had one that didn't show hdmi ports either and it turned out you could turn them on or off with these pannies. It showed them in the menu but where greyed out and you couldnt select them.

Thanks. I could select them. I tried. I had a 42pz80u from when it came out till this January so was familiar with that.
Since I had it hooked up to an HD cable box, I didn't know about what Alastair said.

New board fixed it. Do you guys know of any place that would buy or take the defective board and repair it?
Seems like sooner or later we are going to run out of boards for these tv's.

Something other than the HDMI controller my at have been bad. As the screen is now much clearer, more channels were found during the scan.
Some look even in HD, hooked up to cable through coaxial input.

50PZ80 is a great set, Very reliable, bought one new and it served well till it went pink. Easy quick cure, Cleaned the LVDS cables both ends, greyscale perfection returned....

Only issue--It consumes over 500W and doubles as room-heater!

That 1080i isnt from its own DTV tuner (assuming cable-box)--as thats Not a HD DTV tuner in PZ80.....
That will be 'normal' DTV resolution...

No cable box. Straight from the wall. 1080i.
I'll be trying to sell it.
This is over the air with an antenna.
