Panasonic TH-37PH9UK plasma half screen picture

Hi there, please be gentle. I'm no repair expert at all, with the extent of my experience fiddling with electronics building a desktop computer and replacing a TiVo hard drive. I hope you kind folks can help fix my beloved Panasonic TH-37PH9UK plasma.

What happened: I was watching football when I decided to watch something on Netflix. Chromecast (hooked up to the back of a Yamaha receiver) won't seem to cast onto the tv so I reset the dongle by unplugging/plugging back into the hdmi slot and also unplugging from the power outlet.

Well I must've shorted something as next thing I saw were colored vertical bars going across (appearing on) the screen from left to right. They then stop and what's left are the black and white vertical bars on the left half of the screen.

What I've done: From the service manual for this exact model (and actually I've looked at other manuals, too) and everything I can find on the internet, the fault seems to be either the C2 buffer board, the D-board, or the panel itself.

I did the internal test patterns and same thing – picture is perfect on the right half screen, with the black and white vertical bars on the left.

When I disconnect the D5 connector from the D-board, I only get white on the right half of screen.

I've of course already replaced the C2 buffer board and the D-board, but to no avail.

I've looked at the mylar ribbons (corresponding to the onscreen vertical bars) attached to the panel closely, but nothing particularly weird. (Although the ribbon at the far end is not as flat/with very, very slight warp compared to the other ones.)

I know I'm in total denial that it's the panel but I'm stubborn and want to know I've tried every possible solution. So I guess I'm depending on you guys for a genius idea or to pronounce time of death.

    Thanks so much in advance.

Re: Panasonic TH-37PH9UK plasma half screen picture

This is panel failure and is common on this generation of plasma tv's

I've had the 42" model do the same but I had 1 black bar on the left and found it to be a bad ic on the tab at the bottom

So sadly this is one for the plasma graveyard sadly

But others might suggest something else to try

@jasonr2000 -- hey thanks for the quick response. You had the 42" model? Nice! Yeah, these plasmas had beautiful picture and contrast ... 'tis a shame really. I think I'm approaching the acceptance phase. heh

@ReeceyBurger123 -- hi there! I've re-seated every ribbon and couplers more than I can count, granted just on the C1, C2, DA, and D-boards. I'm attaching pics of the boards (and the slightly warped panel ribbon at the far right) in case you'd like to take a lookie. Much appreciated!

When I disconnect the ribbon cable completely (not screwed in, not in coupler), I get white bar on the part of the screen aligned with that ribbon. When it's screwed in, but with the coupler not locked (I did this accidentally one time), I get a bar of rainbow colored snow.

The coloured snow is because it wasn't screwed in Ive did this myself so your not on your own

Seeing as it goes white when disconnected then my theory is the ribbon's ic is bad and is not repairable as was the issue with mine it's just yours looks worse off than mine as my fault was on the edge connections along the bottom

So then all 4 ribbon cables (not just the 1 warped one) on that half side went bad when I was futzing with the chromecast dongle?? Gah.

Thanks for your help, though, jason!

Slight chance you can have a control board issue.

Gonna say 99% bad panel...whenever you have single pixel lines it's a bad panel almost always.

Hey I was just thinking ... if the ic on the ribbon is indeed bad, shouldn't the image change when I disconnect the ribbon? (Meaning, I'm removing something bad from the equation, so shouldn't I see something different?)

Like, when I disconnect a good ribbon from the good half of the screen, I get the rainbow bar as in the pic below. If the image is unaffected whether or not a supposedly bad ic is connected, that makes me think it's not the ribbon then and something is just not reaching that C2 board?

(I know I sound like I'm reaching but I just want to understand. Forget about TVs ... In general, in any experiment, you remove a bad ingredient, you get a different result.)

I don't think I expressed my question very well ...

I meant, regardless of whether or not a ribbon is bad, shouldn't the image have that same rainbow vertical bar as the other disconnected ribbon? Since it's disconnected??

That's a valid point but doing this to a good one isnt good

You could try disconnect one top ribbon connector from the buffer board power it up and see if the top changes or goes all black

                                Another suggestion is all

Well that was interesting ... When I completely remove the flat ribbon connecting the D-board to the C2 board (if that was what you were suggesting), I don't even get the red LED light on the front of the set. Like there's no power. I hear the double click when I press the power button on the set, but nothing happens when I press "on" on the remote. No picture, no LED light.

The D board controls the power LED on some earlier Panasonic sets.

Ahh gotcha ... I was totally confused there and wondered what the heck does that have to do with power.

I don't suppose you know what the DA board does on this set? In my troubleshooting research, I've sometimes seen reference to a DG board and wondered if my DA board is the equivalent.

Thanks again everyone for your continued feedback and support.

My Panasonic Plasma model P55VT50 has started displaying "interference" on just the left half of the screen only (left when facing the screen). Sometimes it's concentrated in about the first 30 seconds after startup, then disappears. Other times it's fine at startup and then randomly does it later on. When it flashes the interference it's very quick and doesn't stay on the screen unless it flashes repeatedly in a row.

This image is a screen shot from a video I took. This is an example of the interference at its worst. Often the interference is much smaller...

                                          hello,
I hope someone on this forum can assist me.
                                          I have a panasonic TH-42PC77U plasma television.
the lower 1/2 of the screen has become flaky....in and out, then finally goes black and you can only see the top portion.
i have performed the reset to default settings quite a few times. Panasonic recommended..did not believe this would help...it didn't.
I have removed the back panel and looked around for something obvious...burn marks in a board, etc....nothing obvious...
I have read some posts that suggest the problem is related to the boards on the left...

                                          Hello,

Stopped by this site trying to fix my parents Panasonic Plasma TV.

                                          Model number is TH-50PZ85U

Power comes on and the red power light stays on solid.

Did a few checks like hold the power button on for 60 seconds, hold the - Volume while holding the menu button, no luck, still@ blank grey screen as the screen lights up very vague.

I also hear a few clicks.

I also think my parents said there was a thunderstorm and the TV failed after that.

Section 6 in the service manual talks about power and no screen,...

Panasonic Tx-40cx400b top left half screen not displaying correct

                                          Hi,

Trying to work out if this is TFT problem or TCon issue.
The TV powers up but the top half of the screen, from the right it is OK, but as you look across to the left halfway across it starts get duller and duller until it is very dark on the lefthand side, currently I trying to clean the remote as it seems to have something film wise on the pads stopping it from registering buttons pressed.

Also when changing the screen size of Windows PC display to say to a smaller pixel sizewindow, the original window displayin the top left stays/takes a few seconds to disappear?...

Hello everyone, I’ve just been given a Samsung UE55JU6800K smart tv as it had white spots on the screen due to the led lenses falling off. After refitting them & putting the tv back together I thought it was a nice easy fix for a free bedroom tv , then I tried it before screwing the back into place. I realised that the right side of the screen was darker than the other side, I removed the screen again as I thought the backlights had failed but they are fine.
I put the screen back in place & turned it back on . The screen seemed to be ok again but different screens on the same...
