Seasonic B12 BC-550 – barely 2 years old and with BAD CAPS already!
      by momaka
I know I've been a little scarce lately (like the last 2-3 years), but I'm still here and still doing my thing with fixing PSUs.

For today's considerations, I have a Seasonic B12 BC-550 [A551bcafh] 550 Watt ATX power supply for you (click on links for full size images).

It's a modern ATX unit with fixed (non-modular) cables and an 80-plus bronze certificate. Here's the label:

Customer with SS AMP not used in years
      by Uranium-235
He has a pioneer SA 608, matching Tuner (TS 608) and Tape deck (CT F600) and a pointless timer (DT 400)...late 70's early 80's from my research

We're going to try to focus this as a Turntable setup (his turntable is a seemingly cheapo from like 10 years ago...but it does have a phono out), which is at least comforting because the amp has a phono input. It also had a USB port, looks pretty cheap

I'm trying to go for an all analog here. What is the likely problematic caps? Power? I've never dealt with amps this old and of this type. I replaced them in a cheap yamaha...

Hi, I'm a computer tech. I want to thank Badcaps for providing this forum. I have spent many hours over the years lurking here. Much of my education regarding the faulty capacitor issues plaguing the industry was gained here. Thank you!

failing hard drives after sitting for years...
      by eccerr0r
With the discussion about water pumps failing when cars sit for a while, I wonder what people have seen with hard drives. Do people see hard drives failing after being sat on the shelf for a long time unpowered versus a hard drive that's at least powered up at least once in a while, say, weekly?

Wonder if it's worth spinning up the spare spinners once in a while to keep the bearings lubricated?

Wonder how I should best keep my cold spares for my RAID "fresh" for eventual failures of the working drives. Was thinking about keeping a hot spare but that's another...
