    Samsung LE40B530P7W won't power up - Red LED flashes 5 times

    Hi everyone,

    I'm having some trouble diagnosing a problem with my TV. As mentioned in the title, I am unable to power on my TV. The red LED flashes 5 times when turning it on at the wall, then stops and there is no sign of life.

    This must be an error code but I'm unable to find any info on it online. My initial thoughts are that this will be a problem with the power board but I am pretty inexperienced in this area so I'm happy to be advised otherwise.

    There are no bulging caps on the power board, and I've checked all connections between boards.

    Not been able to find a service manual, just the user manual which has this...

    "Screen is black and power indicator light blinks steadily
    • On your computer check; Power, Signal Cable.
    • The TV is using its power management system.
    • Move the computer's mouse or press any key on the keyboard

    Are you willing to remove the back cover from your TV and do a little diagnosis?

        You're pretty close to me, eh...
        Pull the back cover off then & get us some pics to look at.
        I seem to remember doing one of these a couple of months ago. Had a bad PFC circuit (no backlight but had sound) causing a similar fault...

          We are pretty close! Guessing your living north Leeds if your a student? I'm in LS10 on the south side.

          I've attached some pictures, hopefully they are detailed enough, let me know if theyre not and I'll get some more

            Pics could do with being a little clearer... Especially at the connector that goes to the mainboard so we can see any print on it.

              Hopefully these are a bit clearer. Can upload more detailed pictures from elsewhere on the board if required.

                Ok as Tom has had previous issues with this set lets test the PFC circuit first.

                You will be testing the HOT (Deadly) side of the board so be careful not to touch anything other than with the probes. You will see 2 large capacitors on the PSU, Set your DMM to VDC and test across (Probe to each leg) of one of those capacitors. Be careful not to slip and allow the probes to touch.

                What reading do you get?

                  I live in LS6.
                  Before you dive in to testing the PFC, just disconnect the main board to power board connector & power up the set.
                  If the backlight comes on (you won't get picture or sound) this indicates the main board or t-con board is bad
                  Otherwise the issue is with the power board.

                    The good news is (I think?) That's it's looking like it's either the tcon or main board. Is there a way of diagnosing it further, or is it a case of trying both?

                      You can connect the main board, with the T-con disconnected from the main. If the set powers up with backlight and sound, the T-con or panel is short. If not, the main board is at fault.

                        OK so back to the original problem with the main board connected and the tcon disconnected, so its the main board! I've found a replacement on ebay so i'll get it ordered and fitted, and report back with the result.

                        Will that technique of disconnecting things one at a time moving away from the power board work with future TVs I repair, or is it specific to units with a combined power/inverter board? definately something to remember either way...

                            Hey guys ...
                            I know the post is old and so is the screen model
                            I have the exact same model even from the same year of production as was stamped on 09.01.02

                            The screen recently decided that he was tired or something ...
                            Right After it turns on for a few seconds it turns itself off ...
                            After I poped it open and visually checked that the capacitors were not fickle or leaky and everything seemed normal.
                            After checking whether the current is steady on the standby mode PIN (5.2V), I went to another test and simply disconnected the connector and connected the poer outlet, the screen turned on for a few seconds and immediately turned off.

                            Do I still have to replace capacitors even if they look new?
                            Or is it a completely different problem?

                                Well , you already tried to power on the tv with the mainboard disconnected. Backlight turned on for a moment and the tv shut down...

                                This will be a power supply or backlight problem. I would say one of the inverters on the power supply has failed.
                                It makes the most sense just looking at your situation.

                                The power supply tries to turn on the backlight , one or more inverters failed and power supply detects error and shuts down. Just a guess , you need to measure the inverters.
                                I only repair Panasonic plasma tv's! Currently owning a TX-P55VT50 and still searching for a ZT60!

                                    Do not test the voltage output of the inverters, you will probably damage your meter.
                                    With power OFF, compare the resistance of the transformers, they should be similar (within about 10% or so)
