    Vestel Dvd Roms Need Help

Hi all a friend of mine has lots of tvs ranging from 19"-26" they are all umc based logik brand, how ever they use a vestel dvd rom. The main issue is that at least 1 in 3 tvs the dvd player doesn't work at all, it wont even load the disk I have checked the board for dead shorts and nothing is obviously dead, if anyone has any experience with these junks please comment as we would like to get these players working and need help on where to check next. Any help is much appreciated thank you.
The dvd rom model is 213052900 these can be purchased online but that would cause an instant profit loss so we would like to get the original ones up and running.

Yes all the voltages are there we have tried new mainboards as well, im really beinging to think that one of the main controller chips is bad which is a shame because there are no replacements availble.

Disconnect the disc motor and take a 9V battery.

Put the batt The Wrong Way round on the motor--run for 15 seconds.

Then reverse batt, and run for 15 secs again.

        Re-connect and it 'Should' work.

          the dvd is virtually stand-alone.
if you have voltages, and it wont suck the disk in, check the switches that detect a disk and test the motor with a 9v battery.

that's all i can think of.
normally you can load & unload a disk wih nothing but power connected.

the lasers dont last though - that's why i bin them.

Both the motors spin fine when I use a 9v battery, so that tells me they aren't being driven by the mainboard but thats where im stuck because everything tests fine and there are no shorts :L

I think that one of the main control chips is bad, not the mainboard as it works with other dvd players.

Right--Did you try them again After spinning the wrong-way with the battery?

The Object of the idea is to clean the motor's commutator as what happens is the motor is unable to spin up quick/fast enough to read TOC....

Cleaning the com with the batt trick--Usually--but not always restores operation.

Looks like one of the dreaded Chinese DVD ROMs. I don't think Vestel makes them. They would probably be better at it. Do you have any video output from it? Usually the output is CVBS so you can connect any old TV to it and get a video output, or see the output on a scope.

Think if you just give it 12V (and maybe 5V as well, depends on the design) it'll just run and output video. That's my experience from other DVD drives. You can then look for something like a video signal on one of the pins, about 2Vp-p amplitude... if you uncle has ever repaired old CRT TVs he'll know what a CVBS (PAL/NTSC/etc) signal looks like

I think that one of the chips that drives and powers the other processors has gone bad I will take a photo and highlight which chip I think is bad, in fact it even gets warm to the touch where as non of the others do meaning it could be possible shorted. I cant seem to find a replacement so I think that its scrap unfortunately.

Warm could be ok. It depends. Did you check for any video output?

Re: Vestel Dvd Roms Need Help

                                  i'm confused.
does it load the disk but not read it?
because i thought it wouldnt load.

if it loads the disk, and the disk twitches for a second then i will say the laser is weak and needs a tweek.

the controller will power up the laser and look for a reflection to adjust the focus,
if the beam is weak it will assume there is no disk and shutdown.
the laser power ajustment is on the side of the laser assembly, there are 2 usually.
one is for cd, the other for dvd.

try putting an audio cd in the drive.

It does nothing just plain nothing, the tv doesn't even recognise it as a dvd rom just dead. These tvs when they power up a good dvd drive will do that laser initiation noise but a bad one like the does nothing at all no initiation noise at all.
Tom we hooked it upto the scope and got nothing, voltage is going into the chip that I think is defective but nothing is coming out when I get home I will take photos of the main processor chips and get back to you on the model numbers.
