    Advice on vertical lines/TAB bonds

    Hi,

    I recently got an 40" Toshiba LCD TV. The seller said there was an intermittent issue with the sound but otherwise it was good.
    After getting it home I turned it on and left it switched on for a while, After approximately 30 minutes 2 thin verticle lines appeared.

    I know I can apply pressure to repair this but, I'd like to know if this could have happened through transporting it or is it just age related with hot/cold cycles, expanding and contracting the different metals in the bond. I was carefu getting it back and had it laid LCD sidedown flat on the bed in my campervan.

      usually if you didn't press on the screen and crack it or damaged in any way shape or form tab bond failure usually happens with just hot and cold cycles over use of time
      Did I leave the soldering iron on?

          That's what I thought. Just wanted to be sure. The guy I bought it from seemed to be in a hurry to get me out of the way, had the TV by the door so didn't offer to turn it on. It's from eBay, his feedback seemed good. Guess I'll send him a message and see if I can get some of the money back.

              Guessing you bought a Vestel crapper, the panels are well known to engage in spontaneous seppuku. Nothing you can do in most cases... panel has failed.

                  Hi Tom,
                  I like the Tesla pic. I went to Jodrell bank about a week ago. Afterwards I went to a place called Knutsford. I didn't realy like Knutsford much apart from the Tesla showroom. Didn't even know there were any in the north.
                  The TV is an older Toshiba so is actually made by them. I was surprised how many through hole components were in there. I think that I can fix it, just annoyed about the seller not mentioning it and the extra time required for the repair :/

                      It appears you were right Tom. Pressing the tabs made no difference. Nor did cleaning the TCON connectors. When I cooled down the edge of the panel where the line was it disappeared. So looks like an internal LCD fault?
                      The seller has agreed to let me return it for a full refund. He said he tested it for a couple of hours before. I told him that it would depend on a number of factors including the temperature of the TV when it was turned on.
                      I thought a TAB bond problem would be more common when dealing with a set with a vertical line? Maybe I was unlucky!

                          Hello, I have a screen in where sometimes when I open it pop-up vertical multicolor lines (I would say the most of them are green). If I tun off and turn on the screen the lines dissapear or if I leave open the screen after approximately five minutes the lines gone. I measured the below voltages on the main PCB and on the T-CON board and the voltages are the same when it doesn’t display the vertical lines and when it displays the vertical lines. Also, I cleaned all the connectors very good with IPA. I moved back and forth the connectors and the COF tabs but the vertical lines didn't displayed...

                          Hello there, ive recently found an older 55inch Samsung SmartTV.
                          Sadly it has vertical lines at the left and one line in the middle-right.

                          I have already tested out the connections and have looked at the soldered ribbons of the LCD panel to see if some contacts got loose by pushing them a bit but with no success.
                          I have factory resetted the TV as well but also with no luck.

                          I am afraid that it is indeed a LCD Panel issue but there are NO scratches or any impact-marks..

                          A similar issue has been posted as well but also with no actual response ...

                          First. it has no picture at all. i solved it by covering the ckv lines using tape to to block the connections

                          Second. now has picture but with vertical lines that follow the image. tcon board ic overheating

                          tried blocking LC lines too, but same results



                          is it lcd panel issue or tcon board issue?...

                          Hello,

                          i order a t-con because i had bad colors on my SONY KDL-40V3000 :




                          With the new t-con the color are good but there are vertical lines on all the screen :




                          I've tried the old t-con and it returned to the initial issue (bad colors but no vertical lines)

                          Is there a way to fix the vertical lines on the new t-con ?

                          Thanks for offering your assistance with this. I'm an electronics enthusiast with moderate level of competence (have a decent lab with two power supplies, microscope, DSO, hot air, good iron, can competently work at a component level on SMDs, design and solder own PCBs etc). I really enjoying fixing things and learning new stuff so took up a free 58" LED TV and have been googling and watching Youtube videos to see if I can fix this!
