Sharp Aquos 42D64U -- tiny vertical lines

Hello,
new to the forum

Would appreciate guidance in troubleshooting my TV.

Attached are the pics showing the problem (3 small pics in the zip file)

Prior to posting I had read Bud Martin's troubleshooting guide in the sticky section.

Given the description of the symptoms, my thinking is that my problem would be
with item 4 (The T-CON (Timing Control or LCD controller) board, or the LCD panel (Item 5).

However, I am a total newbie, and would appreciate advice on what to look for.

Also my TV does not have a USB port commonly available to this TV, so I could not flash a newer firmware to see if it fixes it.

I bought the TV from brandsmart USA in Florida. Probably in 2007 and it just recently started showing the problem (I had eliminated cables/video sources from potential suspects).

Very simple and easy fix

Open the Set, Remove the Cover which covers the ICs on the Main Board and apply some liquid flux to the pins of 3 Ics on the Main Board and Heat (This is considered Re-Flowing ICs) and, you should be all set

I use this method all the time and works perfect for us

The reason this happens is due to the type of solder used these days. The Solder contains more tin than solder and, thus does Not expand at the same times as the other metals and looses connection. Where original solder will flex with the other metals when heating and cooling over time

If you have access to liquid solder this is a more permanent fix but, simply re-flowing the IC will last a few years at least

I have the same issue, vertical lines suddenly appeared on my 10 year old Sharp Aquos LC-42D72U. See attached pictures of the screen. The lines are there even in the menus so nothing to do with input signal.

I am going to crack open the case and see if I can find any cold solder joints or anything else loose as you suggest. Will post results later...

Well whatever I did it worked!! I did not find any chips or ICs to re-solder, they are all surface mount and would require equipment I don't have to solder. But I did re-seat all the ribbon cables and I loosened and re-tightened some of the screws holding down the heat shield on the large circuit board. Not sure what solved it but now the TV is like new, picture is great!

Not sure if I fixed it permanently.. if it comes back, can you by looking at the attached pictures give me some clues as to which ICs or chips or cables may be the cause of the issue I was having so that I can at least narrow down any future troubleshooting to those items?

Either A) Bad connection and reseating resolved it or B) there are cold joints and screwing down the shield has forced the connections together allowing it to work. Reflow those connections if I were you... Poor connections creates resistance which in turn creates heat... You can figure the possible outcomes

All you need is flux and a soldering iron

Thanks for your reply. Yeah I actually tested the TV after I reseated the flat cables and the issue was still present.. then I tried to get the heat shield off the main board but wasn't able to, it was secured on one side with some plastic fasteners which I did not want to break. As I screwed the shield back down again I noticed that it didn't make good contact with one of the larger chips (see picture) so I bent it a bit to put more pressure on that chip. Perhaps this pressure is what fixed the issue as to my surprise it worked after reassembly.

To re-flow those connections.. what's the best procedure for these surface mount ICs? I should invest in a proper soldering iron as the one I have now is too old and big for this, can you recommend what I should buy? And what type of flux is best to get?
