Panasonic Plasma TC-P42C2 Clicks 10 Times Help!

I have a Panasonic Plasma TC-P42C2 that is clicking 10 times with no screen or backlight. I don't know much about this stuff. New to repairing tv's. I've looked at the back and don't see any bulging caps (but that doesn't mean I'm overlooking something with regards to the caps). Suggestions for what I can do? Thanks in advance!

Check SS board TNPA5072, transistors Q021,022,001,002 for short cct.

Thanks! Ok, please don't laugh at my rookie questions. lol I found the board and transistors. Now, how do I check them? Do I need a voltage multimeter? (Not that I know how to use one, but I just bought one and am anxious to figure it out lol) Thanks again! I really appreciate the help.

can you tell me what meter so i can see what i'm dealing with? needs continuity / diode setting or use resitance. Just probe any 2 of the 3 legs. the tab is the centre leg

Innova 3320 Multimeter. Mind you, I've never used one of these before. If you could tell me which setting to turn the dial to on the face of it (and save me a bunch of instruction reading time), that would be great. Also, do I need to have the tv plugged in or turned on?

what's the rush? Hope you understand symbols, reading the manual will help. Turn the dial to the audible symbol below the diode symbol and the probe those transistors. If the first one shows short (continuous beep), not much point checking the rest.

definitely do not have the TV on. About 200v goes to the board.

Yeah, I'll definitely end up reading it. I admit, I'm an instruction reader. lol Last two questions. Tv off, but does it need to be plugged in? And when probing, do I touch the black probe to the metal frame (ground) and the red to each leg of the transistor?

unplug for safety, just find the transistors, pick 2 legs, and put probe on each, does not matter for this. just need to see if they are dead short

TBH--and Dont take this the wrong way

--A Plasma TV set isnt something I would recommend someone who has NO experience whatsoever--as in not even knowing what setting to use on a meter-- to attempt repairing....

Very serious currents and voltages flow around a Plasma panel, peaking at up to 450V, at 300 odd amps and can cause electricution and or serious damage to the set if the basics of safety (Which you may--or may not know....) are not followed.....

These are pretty complicated devices, and great care is needed in working on them....

In your case, Basic testing for shorts on the two SS/SC boards-- With The Set UNPLUGGED from the mains--can be done, and then the faulty board complete replaced, in this instance until you have built up sufficient knowledge to go further on a future project.....

Panasonic sets are well known as being TROUBLE to repair--even for guys of many years experience. Not a good 'Starter-Set' for anyone!

Got it, tw2005. Thanks. I'll check it out tonight when I get home. And thanks Alastair E! I appreciate the heads up. I'll keep everything you said in mind. I've fixed two tv's so far (LCD's), but they were very easy, and I probably got a little lucky. Just a couple board swaps, which is what I'm hoping for in this case. My soldering isn't perfected yet either, so I'm kinda just hoping I can swap a board and be done with it. Also, coincidentally since you mention starter-sets... I have another post on here for an LCD with what you would probably consider a much more common problem. See link below. Again, I really appreciate you guys helping.

Here's a safety tip for ya, if working LIVE--

Keep your left hand--In yer pocket....
                      (Reverse if left-handed....)

Doing so, lessens the risk of electric current passing through the chest/heart and causing --Issues! Wont stop you having a belt--but could save your life.

Update: (fyi - The 2 paragraphs below are different even though they initially sound the same)

Q001 and Q002 both responded the same way. With either probe (black or red) on the top and middle legs, there would be a constant audible sound. So, black on top and red on middle, or red on top and black on middle, there would be a constant audible sound. Any configuration with either probe touching the lower leg and there would be no sound.

Q021 and Q022 both responded the same way. With either probe (black or red) on the middle and lower legs, there would be an audible sound that would last about 2 seconds then stop. So, black on middle and red on bottom, or red on middle and black on bottom, there would be an audible sound that would last about 2 seconds then stop. Any configuration with either probe touching the upper leg and there would be no sound.

Q001 and Q002 are shorted and need to be replaced.

PS - Is there a way for me to edit the thread title? I just realized I put "clicks" instead of "blinks".

not sure if you've done it right, the tab and middle stub are the same connection, so did you test middle to left or midlle to right or the 2 outer legas?

I only touched the side that had three legs sticking out. I guess maybe I shouldn't call the middle one a leg since it isn't as long as the rest. I'm assuming the tab is the single piece on the opposite side of the three? I didn't touch that side. As far as what I tested on the side with the three pieces sticking out, I tested all possible configurations with the two probes. And that was done on all four transistors.

ok, so was it a constant beep then indicating short? if you set meter to resistance or ohms, your meter is auto ranging, probe across pin 1 - 3, the outer legs. what resistance do you get.
