LG 50PK550 - Screen flash, then gray

    Hi there,

I have a LG 50PK550 Plasma. Last week, the TV suddenly powered off while playing music from my RASPBMC setup. I disconnected the TV from power and reconnected, tried to power up....
The screen flashed for a second then went gray and stayed like that. The remote and front panel controls are unresponsive.

I removed the back cover and tested the SMPS's fuses, diodes and power resistors, which all work. Then I tried the AUTO_GEN test pattern, with the LVDS cable disonnected from the mainboard.
    The test pattern worked!

Does this mean that the mainboard is defintely the culprit?
I've read some posts on these forums saying that a bad firmware flash could be the problem aswell. I will try using as null modem cable this evening to see if it is indeed the case.
Another thing I'd like to try is resolder the BGA chip and the surrounding components on the mainboard.

Please let me know if my troubleshooting has been correct so far...

    Thanks

Yes, you have a bad main board. This is a common fault on LG's premium plasmas.

Ok, thanks, I'm going to try see if I can get into the board using the serial port and using Putty to see if overwriting the firmware would work. How would one overwrite or flash the firmware using the serial port? What are the commands I'd use?

The RS232 is mostly for control only, to allow you to remotely change channels or volume. There's possibly a limited service mode, but I wouldn't bet on it.

Sharp TFT-LCD Model No. LQ050Q5DR01 gray screen
            by Mad_Science
I have a older eddy current tester made by Olympus that uses interchangeable TFT-LCD screens. I have two devices that each take the same removable screens. One is an Olympus NORTEC 200D+ and the other is an Olympus SONIC 1200M EMI. I have searched the internet high and low for service manuals for these units with no luck. Both these units were used extensively by the US military for NDT on airplanes. The detachable screen plugs into the base unit via a weird non standard VGA connector. Buttons on the removable display are used to power the units on. When the power button is pressed the unit makes...

Macbook 2017 with touchbar (A1706) won't turn on after removing the screen
            by Ryan.man
Hello everybody! Posting this in hopes somebody has some expertise that leads to a clear path of troubleshooting that saves me a lot of time!

My macbook has the flex cable problem, the one that prevents the screen turning on. Ive been dealing with this for the last 3 years. Last year it went dead and I managed to fix it following youtube tutorials. But my fix wasnt the best, the problem returned a month later. This week, it went dead again. I again tried to fix it.

This time the original cable broke too close to the screen, it can't be fixed without tearing the screen...

Macbook Air M2 A2681 Kernel panics after screen replacement
            by reformatt
Just had a customer bring in a M2 MBA A2681 that had had a screen replacement in April at another repairer. Since then, she has been getting intermittent kernel panics. It's an aftermarket screen, and of course it fails in diagnostics as the calibration hasn't been done. The error in the panic log is "No device added after powering on the rails".

It seems the original repairer has swapped the board and the screen to other MAC's, and said that it isn't a screen issue. From what I understand, by doing a quick search on Google, this is in fact a screen issue. The panic relates...

iphone XS turns off when press on screen.
            by smic717394
            Hi,

I have a iphone XS that came in for a screen replacement, the screen was badly cracked, and inside missing scues, on the back of the screen still the blue protector, the screen was a LCD. So we replaced the screen and all good, installed the screen and we noticed that pressing the screen with a bit of force but not excessive, the phone dies. After plugging the charger it turns back on, but again if you press it it dies. I open the phone again, and I can't see anything major, with the phone open, if I press on the logic board, battery, charging board, or even putting pressure on...

[Help] Lenovo Yoga Slim 7-14ARE05 (DA0LS3MBAF0) – 25Q80DVN1G Flash Is All FF, USB-C PD Stuck at 5V
            by ekozeko333
            Hi all,
I’m trying to recover a Lenovo Yoga Slim 7-14ARE05 with board DA0LS3MBAF0 Rev:F. I’ve run into an unusual issue where USB-C PD is stuck at 4.7–5V and the system won’t boot (keyboard lights flash briefly, then nothing).
🔥 The Problem Started After Suspected ESD/PD Fault
I experienced a power issue or ESD event through a USB-C charger
After that, the NX20P5090 power switch was visibly burned and was replaced
Now the PD controller always negotiates 5V @ 2A, even with known-good chargers
