sony kdl -40z4100 gamma chip issue

well I figured I'd start on my next project TV powers on fine this is what I get on the screen all looks normal for a second and goes to this image with shadowing smear across the screen left side of screen looks a little darker than right side of screen and I was thinking maybe it was the as15 chip gamma but I'm not sure.

Colors are dark and very saturated looking. Also screen is holding images like retention if I leave the menu on for a little while.

oh and I already took the panel shield off and probed the IC's to see if there is a problem and it doesn't appear that it's a tab bond issue.

Here's how the screen looks with the menu opened over the video.

I have a Sony KDL-40SL140 that was doing the same thing. It would have a great picture when first turned on and then it would look bleached out after about 10 minutes. I replaced the AS15-F chip and Its been fine ever since. The picture is so good I decided to keep it for myself. I don't know what you have for equipment but I used a hot air station and didn't have any problems getting the old chip off. The pins are real small and close together, I spent about 1/2 an hour trying to line up the new one. After you solder in the new one, look at it real good under a magnifier to make sure you dont have any bridging. I think thats where most people mess up. Also, not sure if its necessary but when I soldered mine in I skipped around so as not to get the chip too hot in any one area.

Edit: I'm not sure about the one side being a little darker and retaining images. Mine wasn't doing that. if its a few minutes before this occurs then try some freeze spray on the AS15 chip and see if the picture comes back to normal.

thanks for the tip that should be no problem I rebuild buffer boards so this should be easy.

Before I tear into this tcon I happen to have a tcon from a kdl-46z4100. Tcon identical to this one. Of course different size screen. Wha t would happen if I tried it in this tv to see if the symptoms I have dissappear. Of.course there will be other mismatch issues in uniformity im sure.

The 1st pic is a pretty solid example of a tab bond fault, the others could be gamma chip too.

Would I be ok to try the 46 inch version of this tcon?

If it has identical connections usually not a problem. I have done 46" to 40" before on a Samsung panel and 32" to 40" too.

well I swapped boards and it got better its not negative image anymore or really dark but I'm getting these green areas in the black areas and things seem brighter than normal I'm wondering if this is a setting in the mainboard

Are there gamna differences in the two panels? Part Number on the tcon is identical surprisingly.

Try to set main board panel setting, maybe the 40" and 46" are slightly different, try feeding it with 40" data.

How do I adjust sony data. Never messed with service menus since the trinitron. Lol

I could try the 46 inch mainboard but so far all i did was swap the tcon out of the 46 into the 40

okay I think I found something interesting on this board. The 46 version of this TV uses an AS15-F gamma ic. This tv uses an AS15-G gamma ic. The boards are identical minus the last number in the suffix. If im trying a board with the AS15-F gamma ic to use in the tv that requires the AS15-G ic would this cause the problem im seeing on the screen?
