    Sharp 3LS36 - partial vertical collapse from bad C509

    Today, I got a Sharp 3LS36 TV which had the problem of a partial vertical collapse where only a third of the screen can be filled with a picture.
    So I tried replacing capacitors C501 (with a tantalum unit), C503, C506, and C509 in the Vertical section, and measured the originals with my handy capacitor tester.
    Upon measuring the original 1000uF 10V unit (Nichicon VX Series) which was used in position C509, I got an off the scale reading (even at the highest range of up to 20,000uF) on my capacitor tester, which showed that this capacitor was defective, even though the others I mentioned earlier are probably still good.
    C509 was upgraded to a 16V unit as a good measure since the main power rail used by the vertical output stage is 10.7V.

    As a good measure, C615 was replaced with a low-ESR unit, along with C705, and the following capacitor upgrades were also done:
    C701: 1000uF 25V (originally 100uF)
    C704: 1000uF 16V (originally 330uF)
    C623 and C624: 10uF 160V
    My first choice in quality Japanese electrolytics is Nippon Chemi-Con, which has been in business since 1931... the quality of electronics is dependent on the quality of the electrolytics.

      The bad nichicon wasn't bulged was it?

      Yeah I have heard before the capacitance can increase sometimes when the capacitor fails.

      Poor 'nichi ... that shows that all capacitors are the same, in this respect - they all can fail, even the good ones

          This capacitor had no visible signs of being bad - you are certainly right about even the best electrolytics are not immune from failure.
          My first choice in quality Japanese electrolytics is Nippon Chemi-Con, which has been in business since 1931... the quality of electronics is dependent on the quality of the electrolytics.

              VX is an 85*C capacitor, that's probably why it failed in that application...

              Some are worse than others (more aqueuous ones may expand more with exposure to heat but it also depends on the other additives used in the electrolyte and the quality of the inhibitors), but I suppose the quality does vary even in the Japanese supply chain... I would not fault Nichicon. I think the only vaguely similar capacitors that can really take excessive heat (besides non-aqueous lytics maybe, assuming that the heat is not of discolorating range) are functional or solid polymers.

                  Hi all,

                  70" LED TV is Sharp LC-70LE650U.

                  Initial problem was horizontal lines and slow motion lurrs on the bottom left of the screen. So I removed both the left and right ribbon cables from the T-con board and tried to clean it with alcohol and when I put it back, this issue appeared. I tried carefully reinserting the ribbon bon cables but same thing. I checked the traces of the ribbon cables with magnifying glass and everything looks good. I cleaned the small jumper ribbon cable on the left side of the screen which cured the horizontal line and slow motion blurs...

                  Yes, this is a very old Sharp 19" but I would like to fix it if possible. As you can see from the attached picture there is a single red vertical line.
                  Yesterday when I turned the set on, it was there for about 30 minutes then disappeared and did not show up again (set was on for another 3 hours or so).
                  Today it was not there when I powered the set on, then appeared after about 15 minutes. Set has been on for about an hour and it's still there.
                  From what I have read I'm guessing that this might be the t-con board and not the display itself as it does come and go.

                  Partial Success Repairing Vertical White Bands on HP Z30i

                  Hello.

                  I was given a HP Z30i LCD computer monitor that had several white wide vertical bands on it. I had another Z30i that was working and after a lot of swapping of components I found that the logic board, TCON board and associated ribbon cables were healthy. The problem was the ribbon cables that go from a long slender PCB across the top of the panel onto the panel itself. The problem connection was on the PCB side not the glass panel side. These ribbon cables are attached with some kind of heat set adhesive.

                  I'm aware that this type of problem usually isn't repairable...

                  Sharp LC80UH30U Vertical Band

                  Hi all,

                  I just moved to a new apartment and now I got a vertical band on my tv. The band is changing colors all the time. Is there a fix for this? If someone has had the same problem and fixed it I would really appreciate the help as I am retired and on a fixed income and cannot afford a new tv.

                  I can change any boards and bad caps but I'm not good with a volt meter.

                  Thank you very much for any assistance....
