Magnavox 42MF230A/37 intermitent and Red horizontal lines

High, new member here. I love to tinker before I throw out my electronics.
I have saved many a washer/dryer/dishwasher and computer with an inexpensive component change instead of the junk heap.
When I found you guys, my spirits lifted because I have never tried to fix a plasma TV before.

I have a 2006 Magnavox 42MF230A/37 Plasma TV. I think I have two separate problems:

    1) There is a red/green/blue horizontal pixel band on the top 5" of the TV. Below it the TV picture is fine. This has been going on for a few weeks now.

    2) Using an HDMI/DVI cable from my cable box to DVI input on the Plasma, the picture including the pixel band with completely cut out for 5-10 seconds and come back on and appear normal.
I switched inputs to the side yellow RCA, and the picture no longer cuts out. I haven't had a chance to try the component inputs yet.

I opened up the back to expose the boards. The is no burnt smell or components that I can see; neither are there any puffed capacitors.
    Any help would be appreciated.

I know it's 7 years old, but if it could be fixed for ~$150, the tinker factor would be priceless.

Can we see a picture of the fault? I have suspicion that it is a Y-buffer fault.

Definitely a Y-buffer fault then. How's your soldering, or would you prefer to replace the faulty board instead?

I've done plenty of component level repairs.
How easy is it to diagnose?

Re: Magnavox 42MF230A/37 intermitent and Red horizontal lines

Along the left hand side of that picture, you have a long board which connects to the orange/brown connectors which ultimately go to the plasma panel's glass. There is an IC under each heatsink next to the connectors. Replace the top two ICs (~TQFP128 soldering.)

No diagnosis necessary -- unless you want to narrow down exactly which chip is causing the fault (only one is failed, but due to how they are interlaced, it is hard to tell which.)

I think things went from bad to worse. I turned it on to check some voltages, and there was a loud pop and the whole screen went black. Any ideas before I throw in the towel?

It's quite possible that Y-buffer chip that was failing has failed completely. Unplug the top Y-buffer and see if you get an image on the lower half of the display.

Re: Magnavox 42MF230A/37 intermitent and Red horizontal lines

                    I tried disconnecting the top 2, 3, and 4 buffer connectors...nothing changed.
I tried HDMI input on main board and RCA input on side board...only black screen.
I cycled through all the source inputs, but nothing showed up on the screen, not even the no source box that usually appears when I have the wrong input selected.
The only thing different is that the lines that were on top of the screen are now flashing on the bottom 5" of the screen.
I looked again, and I couldn't find any burn marks of puffed caps.

I'm going for a new TV today, but I will keep trying to fix this one until you:
                    1) either say that we found it and it's fixable
                    2) the parts cost more than $150
                    3) you've had enough
I appreciate your help no matter what. Either way, let me know where the beer fund button is, so I can contribute...

I meant the whole board should come out of the set. Do you have screen glow in a dark room?

                        Hi guys

I just started fixing 4k TV few months ago. so I am still learning a lot
I got this tv from friend complaint is ghosting or horizontal lines on image.

never saw the original symptom but I took the tv back home. the funny part is that after bringing to home, the tv worked fine no issue for 3 weeks.
then it started to show the ghosting white image.
I started using the tape method, but this tv does not have a T con board and it has only 1 ribbon cable from main board to the tv panel.
it has 3 thin small boards at the bottom of the...

Sony XBR-65X750D Horizontal lines bottom of screen
                        by ggil44
Hi, I have a Sony XBR-65X750D that has horizontal lines at the bottom 6 inches of the screen. These lines appear to be every other line because the picture is still quite visible behind those lines. The lines appear all the time with a few other lines above and below the 6 inch level blinking on and off at about 2 second intervals. I'm not sure if this is a panel issue or power supply/main board problem. I did replace the T-Con board without any change in the problem. Any suggestions you might have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,

Sony XBR-85X950G Gray horizontal lines and vertical picture shift diagnosis?
                        by noisykid
5.5 year old 85 inch Sony Bravia X950G started showing gray horizontal lines across the bottom of the screen and the picture shifts slightly vertically when it happens. The lines sometimes get bigger/smaller vertically and bounce back. See the video for the problem. It seems to be happening after it warms up after an hour or so. Happens regardless of source. Right now there's nothing but power cable connected and it's happening. We did hook up a new Nintendo Switch to our HDMI switching receiver today, and played for a while with no issues, but this problem didn't occur til a few hours later while...

I just acquired this 3D LED yesterday and it has horizontal lines on a little more than half of the screen. When I first turn it on it has thin black lines going across that makes the image look serrated, and then shortly after patterns of thicker red lines fade in. If I turn it off and right back on it will reset to just the black lines and the red will again fade onto the screen.

I initially thought tab bonds, but flexing the bezel makes no difference, and the fact the image sort of resets after cycling power is different. I haven't opened it up yet to actually test applying...

                        Samsung QE50Q67TAU - horizontal lines
                        by Rubenlily
                        Hello,

First of all I'm new here. While looking I found this amazing forum and I'm very happy I did. Now for my problem:

I picked up a Samsung UHD QLED QE50Q67TAU from 2021 for $50 knowing it was defective. The seller said it had black lines and that it could get stuck in boot randomly.

I've tried a new power cable, hard reset, opening up and jiggling all cables, pressing everywhere to see if I get a reaction but I've gotten nothing. I've tried the tape method but I've only managed to get the lines worse.

I'm no expert but I've done the tape...
