    Vizio p50hdtv20a burnt buffer

I have a Vizio plasma with a burnt buffer chip on the upper board. I removed the bad chip and placed the board back into the unit. Next, I turned the set on with no problems but missing lines due to chip not being in place. My question, is the Ymain okay or do I need to look for a cause as to why the buffer chip burned? I just don't want to plug in a good upper buffer board and have it go up in smoke.

It sounds to me like just a bad buffer chip only. I'd probably not turn it on again until that board is replaced, since you risk damaging the lower board and the Y-Sus (unless you disconnect the boards first). You may want to do a once-over on the Y-Sus (check caps, sample mosfet tests, etc) and confirm your PSU Vs and VA output voltages, just in case.

I removed the Y Sus board and checked Vs and Va with power turned on.

Va is supposed to be 63v. I tested it at 63v.
Vs is supposed to be 207v. I tested it at 210v. A little high but ok.

No shorted mosfets were found on the Y Sus board. The only fuse on the Y Sus board was not blown. Lastly, I tested with an ESR meter all caps, they were ok. I did find one cap with a bulge and was leaking out the top. It tested ok with the ESR meter, but I'll replace it to be on the safe side.

At this point, I think it might be okay to try another upper buffer board without the risk of blowing it.

Thanks for the help and I will post the results of my findings.

After replacing the burnt buffer and a single capacitor, I am happy to report that the tv is working.
