Sony kdl 40s20l1 (2006) blacks out.

I searched, no luck so far.

The tv was in a cabinet in fam room (heat?) and would go black for 3 sec to 30 sec & then come back on with no control touched.

I got a new (replacement) tv & moved the problem tv to my office now to trouble shoot.

Hooked up today & signal from set top box hdmi, works fine so far. The tv is in the open, no cabinet.

Before it was signal from rgb conn but I don't think that should matter.

I will post if/when it blacks out again.

Looking fwd to learning on the forum, I am above avg with auto service repair but definately not as good with electronics.

Thanks if anyone has prelim thoughts.

Intermittant issue.



Update after about 20 min it did a black out & restart as I was typing this, nothing was touched & it was an "instant" restart (like when you restart a computer sort of).

I'm thinking some component is having an intermittant heat issue, just a guess.

Update TV has "cycled" several times in 2-3 hours of "on" time. So far always brief, sort of like an automatic resetting circuit breaker is in operation.



I would like to fix it it's a great tv (720) with good sound & picture, but probably not worth spending more than 100-150 max (parts) to fix if I do the labor.

I will read those threads soon, meanwhile there is a distinct click when it comes back on.



On mine there are no flashing light codes, the green power light goes off (when it blacks) and comes on when it powers up again.

Mine clicks too, But only when turned off with the power button on the tv, if i turn of with remote it goes into standby, Hopefully you will get lucky like me.

Thanks for the posts,

I am now trying to run the tv at lower power by turning down the backlight, brightness, etc to see if it'll run cooler & longer between shut down.

On "full bright etc" it's shutting down about every 20 min for a few sec's only.

The shut downs are shorter now that when I had it closed into the entertainment center in the other room.

Maybe a good fan cleaning?

I was running it on the lower power settings & it turned off (black screen) then tried to turn itself on 4 or 5 times until it finally stayed on.

This is something slightly new I guess.

Back on this thread to close it out. I was able to return the TV to Costco as I bought it before they shortened the return policy on tv/computers.

I am a receipt saver so lucky on that one.

I'll jump back here if some other repair pops up, seems like a real friendly forum.
