Samsung UN40D5005BF edge-lit LED backlights tear down

Got this one in today, it had busted screen so I took it apart to see how Samsung designs Edge-lit LED backlights panel. it only has the LED assemblies (2) on the top edge, each assembly has 125 LED. The voltage feeding for each assembly is about 60VDC (I did not check it for AC reading, but I know it is being pulsed (more likely with PWM) which I can see it on my digital camera). The power supply has PFC Voltage booster, power consumption is almost 100 Watts.
It is amazing how bright this thing with just one edge-lit setup.
The panel is made by SAMSUNG, but the T-CON board is made by SHARP (I did not know when Sharp starts working with Samsung, I know that Samsung is no longer making panel with SONY).
This is going be a great light table.

Looks interesting construction. Only thing I notice is that why is it that LED TV have to be the only thin TV? A thin TV could be made using CCFLs too. I don't see how an LED TV is better than CCFL (in terms of picture quality), although at least light failure is less likely to occur.

Where are the speakers in that thing?

        Great find!

I am surprised, the electronics look pretty decent!

Yeah, I bet that thing is bright, my laptop has an LED backlight, I always keep it on the lowest brightness, unless there is a lot of glare or something.

You could also use the led bar for under-cabinet lighting

@popeye: the scratch is on the top side of the actual LCD panel (the part that contain the liquid crystal), you cannot separate the LCD panel.

On my Sharp LED there is a big speaker which it's very thin on the back of the TV and there are two thin ones under the TV on each side. Total five speakers!
Bud, I would like to see that 390V on my TV
That 66V it's for the LEDs?

The 66VDC is what I measured at the LED connectors.

Re: Samsung UN40D5005BF edge-lit LED backlights tear down

Thanks for putting those pictures up budm, they are interesting to me because i have a Samsung UE37D6100 led edge lit tv. I have had it 8 months with no problems so far, and it's still in warranty for another few months. But once the warranty's run out i was wondering if it would be a good idea to take the back off to see what caps it had fitted. Was thinking it might be wise to replace any that were not a good brand.

I see a mixture of brands on the set you have torn down, so i guess i can expect to find a similar mixture in mine. Obviously i am not going to touch it whilst it is warranty, but do you think it would be a wise precaution to re-cap it once the warranty is up, even though it's not giving trouble?

Cannot really tell, one thing I notice is that it runs really cool since it does not have 16 or more CCFL running which they get pretty hot inside those TV with CCFL.
                  Only time will tell.

I have noticed that mine gives off very little heat from the back, so like you say that may help. I shall have a look anyway once the warranty is up, just to check for any obvious signs of pending trouble. If all looks well i will leave alone but keep my eye on it every 6 months or so. I just don't want something simple like a bad cap taking out a load of other components.

I must admit i was surprised to see that they are only lit along the top edge, i was expecting at least top and bottom lighting, if not all sides. Quite impressed it gives out such an even and bright light in that config.

                        by max789
Hello, I have a problem with my Samsung UE48H6410SSXZG with the main board BN41-02156A and the power board BN44-00709A. Everything seemed like this, the TV could no longer be switched on, the standby LED always flashed 5x2 times. Backlight was off and no sound from TV. Also made the flashlight test and there was no picture.

                        I made the following tests:
                        1. Disconnected the main board from Power Board = backlight works.
                        2. Connected the main board and disconnected the T-Con = backlights does not work.

So I ordered a main board from Ebay also BN41-02156A but from...
