    Beware of cracked screen LCDs

My dad picked up a 32" LCD today with no power.

Turned out the guy pulled the fuses from the PSU and filter board, and the screen was cracked.

My dad didn't notice this, but I can't expect him to - you can just about see this from certain angles.

    For £20 he did that...

Looks like the guy punched it - or threw something at it.

The boards are all otherwise okay. (It's a Vestel so the boards are common failures.)

I've got a 32" LCD spare, I may be able to change the LCD...

    You live and you learn.

I have had no problem getting TVs. I can get one every week. For around £20 to £50 each.

I would avoid any plasmas below 1024x768 resolution (HD Ready); I'd also avoid any LG Plasma that's not 1080p because they have common problems with sparklies which are difficult to get rid of.

Re: Beware of cracked screen LCDs

I would be very cautious about buying another 37" tv as they seem to be more difficult to get the mainboard's for. Those that do sell them want to pull your pants down.
Fixed so far : 1 Home cinema system, 16 LCD Monitors, 4 LCD TV's

I've only repaired two 37" TVs before - they are a rare screen size now compared to 40" and 42". They were easy fixes, one bad caps (Bush), another inverter transformer failure (Philips).

I cant wait to clear the decks so that I can work on my Barco 42" monitor that will be be a laugh.

I have a few empty monitor shells that I need to take to the tip. Do they tend to have the tv's piled up there for you to buy or do you have to ask a man to go and make them appear from somewhere?

They usually have one or two, I don't have to ask to see them, but I usually ask them to plug it in.

Re: Beware of cracked screen LCDs

Hah, I've just noticed this TV doesn't have HDMI or Component or VGA inputs...

Yet it has a 1366x768 panel... But it has no way of ever displaying anything above 720x576!!

                      Why??

Because of this I might not bother repairing it, as it's not worth much.

Hmm. These LCDs are quite rugged!

Re: Beware of cracked screen LCDs

Just cause people are asking 50 pounds doesnt mean you cant offer them less. In my experience people are usually willing to accept about 30% less if you are able to pick it up from them / at their convenience.

I fixed a beautiful samsung 37" that i like so much ill probably keep for myself. It was a bad t-con so i had to buy it on ebay, and there wernt a lot listed so i had to pay 50 dollars for the tcon, but it was worth it.
Fixed so far 12 lcd's , 1 plasmas, 5 monitors, 0 dlp's (plan to keep the dlps at 0). and 3 atx power supplies, and 2 motherboards.
