Thick Vertical white bands on Samsung LE40M86BDX

    Hi,

Just aquired this 2007 Samsung LE40M86BDX tv, black screen with thick white bands like in the pic.

Any suggestions what this could be?

I haven't had the back off yet, just picked it up tonight.

Excuse the quality of the pic, light levels weren't great.

    Cheers for now

    Jim

    Panel or t-con.

Hi tom66 and all. Sorry for the short 1st post - it was late!

I'm a newbie to tv repair, something i've been wanting to get into for quite some time.. have decided to take the plunge. 19 years ago I did a few courses with a view to becoming a full time TV engineer, but at that stage there were few if any vacancies anywhere so I stopped the course and went in a totally different career direction.

Now I think i'd like to get into it as a hobby if nothing else.. i'm a fully licensed radio amateur and have a reasonable grasp of basic electronics.

I'm keen to learn, can anyone point me in the direction of the right sort of reading material?

Back on topic, the Samsung 40" I plan on opening up tomorrow, any tips on checking the t-con board?
I see some general info on the web about checking them in a similar way to you would a transistor.. (the board showing semiconductor properties indicates that it is probably ok but if open/short then definitley not) is this applicable to the Samsung?

I guess my first port of call would be the ribbon connection from the t-con to the panel, then diagnose the t-con and if it's ok then strip it for parts, as I am sure a panel is cost prohibitive?

Thanks for the use of the forum

      Jim

The t-con (timing-control) board is usually replaceable, and fairly cheap (depends on the LCD model).
Ebay would be your best bet to get one.

I'd give it a shot and replace the t-con board first. If it turns out to be all that's wrong with the set, don't forget about the caps on the powersupply board (knowing what junk caps Samsung always uses..)

edit: I forgot.. The T-Con board is usually in the top center at the back of the LCD itself. On screens this size it's hidden by a metal cover most of the time (see attachment for an example.. also a 40" Samsung btw)

Thanks Scenic! All noted - am hoping to get out to the shed later to open the TV, will check the caps and have a look at the tcon board so I know im ordering the correct one.
If the t-con board is faulty, I would be interested in finding out if it's possible to fix it, but one step at a time

          Will post my findings later

Ok, got the back of the tv and had a look 1st at the caps on the PSU - none seem to be bulging so straight to the tcon board. The board in this unit is a t400hw01 V0 checking on eBay I see some boards, with different V numbers - is this version? are they interchangeable?

I have noticed that the vertical lines appear in different locations on the screen if I turn it on and off multiple times. Also, the lines fade out to black after about 15-20 seconds.

Does this point to anything in particular?

Disconnect the T-con LVDS. Do the lines fade out, or go away quickly?

Reconnect LVDS. Do lines come back quickly, then fade out?

Disconnect it again, then try and activate a menu or source (preferably with sound so you know it works before fiddling around). Then plug it in again - do you get a brief image?

There was a case a while back involving a TV which would show an image briefly, then lock up and the image would slowly fade - it was a bad T-con.

It would seem you have a bad T-con then, but I wouldn't entirely rule out a panel problem.

Edit: Do you have any sound? Does an indicator LED flicker if you use the remote control or side buttons?

I don't currently have a remote for the tv. There is sound though and led flashes during startup before the samsung startup tune.

I'm away from home currently, just been given 3 cheap brand LCD TVs will post more later.

Further to my last post, from memory the channel change works fine, as does source select so I don't think it's a firmware problem.

So very likely to be T-con. Give it a go; they are a low cost part. What's the part # on it?

                          t400hw01 V0

                          Is a t400hw01 V4 compatable?

May be - but only Samsung would know that.

Ok, didn't take the risk, there was a V4 on eBay for 19.99 and a V0 for just shy of 25.00 so I went for it.. not worth risking it for 5.00

Hopefully it will arrive before the holidays, being sent 2nd class post.

Will post an update when it arrives.

1 inline pic isn't too bad.

I will usually ask nicely that newbies please use the manage attachment feature in the future. I also give a list of reasons why not to post inline, but then some people tell me that my reasons are dumb.

Obviously everyone is free to express their opinions and beliefs, but those who do so in the above fashion may not fully understand the consequences.

Ok, thanks to everyone. The TCON board arrived today in the post.

Had it fitted and running in about 20 minutes. Picture looks good, bit of ghosting but the only signal source I have in the workshop at the moment is an old group B outdoor antenna hanging from the ceiling, so was wasnt able to check picture for overall quality.

I will probably bring the set into the house over Christmas and plug it into a decent HD source.

All I need now is a remote!
