    polaroid flm- 1514b power prob and fix!

    figured i would post this. Picked this up tonight for $10. Was sad to see screws missing but what the hell..

    the former owner said it would power on and off intermittently, most of the time it would just continously cycle power and you would have to unplug, replug several times before it would power up and work. Once on it would stay working..

    I confirmed the issue, plugged it in and the power would just cycle every couple seconds..

    Pulled her apart, caps are no name but all visually look o.k.

    On a hunch i replaced the small 22uf startup cap. Also reflowed some questionable but NOT obiously bad solder joints. Put the ps back in and she fired right up!! YAY one cap fixed this yes one.

    If i was keeping this i would probhably recap the entire supply and mainboard but for what im doing, shes done and ready to rock!

    Ive powered it on and off several times as well as unplugged, she fires up every time.

    Classic sign of a capacitor with high ESR. As the cap warms up, the ESR drops enough for the SMPS to start.

      yeah, if only they were all like this.. i go from this to headscratchers like that phillips and that jvc im working on..


      so do you think if i would have heated that little cap with my iron the tv mightve powered on? if so mabye thats a technique i will employ in the future. ( woul dhave to put the iron on an iso though correct?)

        Some people use a hair dryer to heat up caps.

        If you are going to do a lot of TV repairs, it might be worth $50 to $75 to get an ESR meter.

        Maxxarcade, who is a member here, also has youtube channel and he has a number of videos posted (some very recently - 7 in the last 10 days) showing how he repairs TVs, LCDs, etc. He has one video showing his ESR meter and how he uses it to verify caps.

        And yes, he is in the acrade repair business.

          fyi been been running this tv all day today and still going strong

          a sa fellow arcade nut i guess ill have to have a chat with maxxarcade someday.

            My 1514B had a similar problem where it would start blinking after a few minutes and eventually turn off. I assumed it was the capacitor in the power supply shown here in this thread. It turned out not to be. I replaced that cap and it still had the problem. I finally traced it down to the 1000uf cap (the largest one on the main board). I figured while I had it apart I'd replace all of them. Works fine now.
