    Samsung SP-R4232 with bad video

    Hi guys,

New to the forum, but not to the wonderful world of electronics repair.

Trying to get this set going for my buddy, and while I have some Plasma experience, wanted to bounce my suspects with you guys.

Set originally would power on without video, but had audio. Found a blown 8A fuse in the main PS, along with numerous MosFETS and transistors shorted. After pricing the componets I found shorted(About 5), I decided to take the "replace the ps" route.

Now the set fires with video and audio, but the picture has a bunch of vertical lines running throughout the screen. The OSD looks terrible too, so I'm suspecting either the main or the logic. What say U?

Will attach a pic shortly, but need to get in a post before the system would allow me to attach pics

Something I learned at the knee of the Wizard himself. If the vertical lines form a repeating pattern it's the card Samsung refers to as the Misc main card. The one behind the TV main card; the one with the cables running to the X, y, and Z main (sustain) cards.

If they are in a random pattern, it's most likely the panel itself, or the X buffers.

Thanks for the reply PlainBill. Looks like there will be a delay on the pic for a few hours though, but based on what I see and what you've said, looks like a bum panel.

Any way to troubleshoot the X buffers?

I'm not sure. I believe on some panels they were a separate set of boards; on others they were a part of the flex cable to the panel itself. They are usually hidden behind the lower back area of the set, I've never gotten that deep into them (pun deliberate). It appears to use a SDI S42SD plasma panel; sometimes you can find service manuals online for these panels.

A more important issue is just what you have there. That panel has a native resolution of 852x480 (EDTV). Unless you have a brother in law you really dislike, or someone who hates HDTV, it's marketability is limited.

Right now its not about dislikes or hating. Its about overall cost of a working set to replace the non-working. If he can get away with say spending 4 or maybe even $500 to repair this one as opposed to $1500 plus, then the former is a very good looking option for now.

            Where do you live?

Wow, in Canada, you can get a brand new plasma 42 inch 720p from LG, Samsung for $580 CDN dollars. Add taxes + environmental fee and it probably come to just under $650.

And that comes with a 2 year warranty if you buy from Costco or use a credit card to double the warranty.

For $1500 CDN, I can get a 60 inch plasma when it is on clearance sale (last years model or closeout).

Locally I can buy a 50" LG plasma for $800. Used 42" 720P plasma TVs are going for $300 - $375 on Craigslist (other than one optimist who is asking $900 for a 6 year old Panasonic).

If the problem is the plasma panel, the only option would be to replace it. One is listed on eBay for $200 + $67 shipping.

Re: Samsung SP-R4232 with bad video

I've a Samsung PS42V4S with the BN41-00452C mainboard (I assume you might have a similair board like 452A perhaps?) with all vertical lines BUT the OSD works perfectly which means drive and logic is OK. Problem in my set must be in the mainboard, this might be the case even with yours though OSD is not working properly. Just a thought.
If you've got the service manual, see if the logic board may be put in "service mode" and display all white. This will tell what side of the LVDS cable, problem is.

If you have Office installed, you can use their Picture Manager to manipulate them down to 2000x2000. If you want something more robust (and free), give Paint.NET a try. Slightly higher learning curve but works great.

I think maybe you don't know the difference between vertical and horizontal.

I see some hyperbolic red lines, I see a lot of horizontal lines. These may or may not be the product of the photo editing process. But no sign of "a bunch of vertical lines". How about trying a picture of the menu screen?

That pic added whatever horizontal lines you see. I assure you I know the difference between Vertical and Horizontal lines. It seems the camera isnt really showing the Vertical lines as my eyes see it. Here is another shot with the MENU up.

PS. The SM for this set sux. I have it and its done nothing to help me isolate the problem to a board.

Here's a few more. I think these far better show the Vertical lines I'm trying to explain. They say a pic is worth a thousand words, but if the pic sux, then so does the reply.

I've been over this a number of times; one more time. A plasma TV consists of a plasma panel assembly; in this case, supplied by SDI (a division of Samsung), and the various control, sustain, buffer, and probably power supply cards necessary to make it work. Samsung TV division bought the panel from Samsung SDI, and added the TV board, audio amplifiers, speakers, plastic bezel, etc. The service manual for the SP-R4232 covers the portion of the set Samsung TV supplied. There is a second service manual that covers the plasma panel, sustain, etc. You need a service manual for the SDI S42SD; the plasma panel assembly in your TV. That can be found here: http://www.scribd.com/doc/15955387/B...anel-Sdi42sdv3
