HP Laser Jet 4M &WXP - how to make papersource seletion working?

Hi all,

i successfully ported a Sony Vaio VGN-N38L/w Viesta laptop to windows XP Pro.
At the customers site, i installed an HP Laser Jet 4m with an USB > printer port adapter cable.

The printer is working fine, but regardless what i choose at the printers driver options, it only took the paper from the lower paper tray.

I know, that with the old system i managed it (for several years...) to install two logical printers from which the one sourced the paper from the lower tray, the other from the upper one.
Sadly, the former laptop was stolen and i only have got the already formated disk (the thieves sold the complete equipment at ebay ;-) ) from the customer.
I managed to get most of the data, but the c: partition has got a new Windows on it, thus i was not able to save it in a working condition.

With the new system, the printer driver ignores any setting regarding the paper source and uses the lower tray, unless i pull it.
I used the HP Windows XP PCL5 driver and the already included one from MS.

Any help would be appreciated.
May be the USB thing is making the trouble, but i don`t believe this.
Any way, next time i took my old Omnibook 4150 with, which does have an native printer port.

I have the LJ4, but I think it's the same driver package. So far everything has worked fine with the MS XP driver.

Which one is the PCL5 driver? Is that the one from their support page? 'cause if I remember correctly there were only PostScript drivers in that package (which I don't need, and the XP driver is PCL anyway).

The driver is from HP`s support site, it is dated from 2002 if i remember right.
A quick search with Laser jet 4m and you get it and several.
The driver package is labeled as PCL only, but i think this not important.

May be this wired issue is really caused by this USB cable, i think it is best to try it with my old laptop or i try the serial port, which i think i have seen on the Vaio.

How mutch trays does the LJ4 have? not sure, if the second tray is a extension.

might be right about the extra tray if so you will have to specify it in the driver settings.

usb is either working or not working in my opinion.

there is also issue of software settings, like in page setup / source but i dont believe that would be your problem

the only driver i can find is the 4/5/6 PS driver (yes, from 2002).
just checked with mine - the options show the lower tray no matter if it's actually installed or not.
by lower tray i mean the big bulky thing that holds 500 sheets and sits under the printer (guess it's the same at 4 and 4m). the one that's labeled 'hohe kapazität'.

when i tried the HP drivers there were a few issues - however i don't recall if there were any with the paper source - so i went with the MS ones.

Yes will, thats exactly the way what i think about USB, but ATM i would not exclude it from the list.

The PCL5 only driver is German only, you have to switch the language and you get two printer drivers.
One is PS and the other is PCL5 only.
May be i give the PS driver a try.

Regarding the trays, i think there are only two plus the manual paper feed.
So i think i have to disable the "hohe Kapazität" thing.
But IMO this dosn`t mater.
The problem is, that even if i print something from Word and specify the paper source prior to printing it is getting ignored.
Only manual feeding is recognized by the printer.
