PowerMac G4 MDD ACBel Power Supply issues (API1PC36 400W)

    Hello!

First want to thank folks on this forum (Toasty, etc) for the very useful info I've found here that has allowed me to repair a PowerMac G4 MDD Samsung power supply and get this ACBel one working better!

I got a PowerMac G4 MDD for free as it was dead (not booting at all). I was able to confirm it was it's ACBel power supply as another (above mentioned Samsung) power supply works ok with the system.

With this ACBel power supply installed, the system would not boot at all, no power light blink, nothing. I've gone ahead and replaced the "12 shotgun approach caps" as noted in post 11 from this thread
    https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showthread.php?t=14077

    That includes C16, C29, C21, C10, C13, C43, C8, C7, C41, C35, C59, and C60. 4 of these measured bad on ESR tester, others were replaced for good measure.

After replacing those, things improved. Now when I connect only power to the PS, I get +5V and about +25V standby from pin 1 and 14. There is however a fast clicking/ticking noise from the PS - not clear from where it originates, see attached sound clip.

If I jumper the PS connector pin 11 to another ground pin, so that it'll trigger itself on, it does nothing - still hear the noise and the pins 1 and 14 voltages stay the same. Likewise, connecting it to the PowerMac (in case it needs to be under load?) still produces the noise and the system does not power on.

Anyone have suggestions as to things I can try next?

I know there's a least a few more caps on the "fan control" board as noted in the attached board layout picture, the caps in blue. I saw different comments in various places about the caps on this board, whether they're simply for fan control or if they also have some affect on other areas. So not clear if they simply just need replacing as well.

    Thanks!

Obligatory photo of the power supply in question.

After some additional investigation, sounds like at least the C30, C32, and C45 caps also need to be replaced. Pulled them today, all three were bad. So will try with new ones next...

The WT7515 on that PCB labeled "fan control" in your picture is the PSU supervisor.
The PSU will not work if this chip gets unstable voltage supply.
And my personal experience with small caps in PSU's is that they often go dry.
Even when they are not in very demanding places.
So if you already found a few that are bad I would just replace them all.
Especially considering the age of this PSU.

Finally got them, and indeed replacing C30, C32, and C45 caps has now fixed the PS. It powers up fine, no longer making the noise either. Yay!!

I have just fixed 2 of these power supplies, its essentially needed to replace the secondary caps, practically all of them with new ones, best to use brand name caps such as Elna, nichicon, etc. also pay attention to the diameter as the bigger buffer caps are all tall narrow types. i've also noticed the smaller caps, 10uF 47uF and 0.47uF had gone bad, best to also replace those capacitors. I have replaced the smaller caps with ceramic equivalents, this works well, and i think its a good replacement as they will likely last longer. both supplies are now running well!

I am so glad that I found this thread. My PMG4 MDD had suffered the same fate as many other PSUs - pressed the button and immediately turning off, etc. I ordered the offending caps from Digikey and my order arrived this past week. I replaced the "dirty dozen" and I still had the ticking/clicking noise when I would plug it in. After replacing the additional three caps - C30, C32, and C45 - my PSU came back to life!! Yay!

Vizio e601i-A3 - Has Sound and Display, But No Backlight - Bad Power Supply Board or Bad LED Bulbs ?
                by Tynan Dill
I was given this TV from my great uncle. He said it just wouldn't turn on one day out of nowhere, replaced the TV, and gave it to me to possibly fix and use for myself.

Upon bringing it home and plugging it up, it showed a standby light.

I powered it on and without a flashlight, the display showed the "V" but the lighting is very dim, but visible.

The screen seems to blackout and stay black, but with a flashlight I can see the display.

With my Playstation 4 connected via HDMI, and running a game I can hear sound.

                Assuming...

Shock when touching power supply case (ACBel API1PC36 from PowerMac G4 MDD)
                by Snownomow
                Hello!

I recently successfully repaired two Apple PowerMac G4 MDD power supplies by swapping out bad caps, per excellent info found in various threads on this forum - yay!

I was doing testing on one of them, the ACBel API1PC36, with it's case open and had it setup outside of the PowerMac resting on the table with it's power connected to the system (power was also connected to a couple SCSI HDD drives, for a bit extra load). It was working fine, I shut down the system but did not unplug the PS from the power strip (and power strip was left on) so power was going into...

Desoldering gun station modified to use a 18 volt @ 20 amp switching power supply
                by sam_sam_sam
I have wanting to do this project for quite sometime now and I finally found a switching power supply that will work on this desoldering gun station ZD-915 that the original switching power supply took a shit and just was not worth trying to fix it because this switching power is not quite big enough to handle the heater element and the vacuum pump

One note when I tested the switching power supply and the voltage control board I noticed that this desoldering gun heat up much faster than the original switching power supply which I was really surprised by to the point that I might buy...

Modification to a ZD-987 desoldering/soldering station using a external switching power supply
                by sam_sam_sam
I have been working on this concept for quite some time now with limited success but recently I found a switching power supply that is setup for the voltage that this soldering station needs to operate at however it also needs part of the secondary circuit from the original switching power because you need several voltage rails

I once tried to get a ZD-915 desoldering station to work on a 18 volt battery power supply but unfortunately things did not go well but I did find a work around but I might try this idea again but going at a little differently more about this another time...

Definitive technology SC 2000 subwoofer amp's power supply clicking and popping
                by JimBanville
The sub developed a constant popping every couple seconds from woofer and power LED flickering with nothing but wall AC connected. Connecting an audio cable didn't change anything. It doesn't play but a second or two of audio in between the pops.
Opened it up and discovered the power supply is making a faint clicking or ticking sound.
I measured the amp's output to the woofer and it pulses up to 50mv DC to be driver. The pulses coincide with the power supply ticking/clicking.
I measured the power supply output going to the amp board and it too has this pulsing. Voltage cycles...
