    Attempting repair of H240AS-00

A friend of mine has had several Dell power supplies fail in a school and asked if I could figure out the cause. They are model H240AS-00 and they all died from the same catastrophic breakdown of snubber cap C52 as described in threads here, here and here. Parts visibly damaged are Q51, C52, R25, R55 and D53. The fuse and rectifier diodes still measure OK.

I'd like to check if these PSUs can be brought to life by temporarily replacing those 5 parts with stuff from my junk box:
    1. can I substitute a 1 nF, 2 kV cap for C52 (680 pF)? Not sure how critical the capacitance is here.
    2. what is the orientation of D53: stripe towards the edge of the PCB or towards the center?
    3. can I use a 1N4148 for D53?

For posterity, here is the outcome. By comparison with another still working supply, it turned out that the cathode of D53 is near the center. It's a moot point though, as the driver IC and some other bits on the upright PCB had exploded. So these supplies are definitely not repairable after that snubber cap has gone. Pity.

SYMSI70 gas heater, TOP247Y exploded, power supply, snubber network
      by hikomalek
Hello, I have a SYMSI70 gas heater board, which has issues with its primary side power supply, controlled by TOP247Y chip.
When I replace a TOP247Y it explode in 1 second. I have desoldered transformer and measured a winding ratio, so transformer looks like OK.

      Transformer:

      |Info| Primary | Aux | AB | CD|
      |-|----------|----------|-|-|
      |Ratio|1|25|40|12|
      |Voltage AC|230V|9.2V|5.8V|19V|
      |Voltage DC (*1.41)|230V|13V|8.1V|27V|

I have disabled a undervoltage protection of TOP247Y, disconnected secondaries and tried to power it up...

MacBook Pro A2338 keeps restarting when attempting to install macOS
      by Simplebeans
I have just got in a MacBook Pro A2338 which was initially displaying the Apple logo followed by an explanation mark in a circle as described here:- https://support.apple.com/en-gb/102164.

After some error messages attempting to revive and restore the machine via DFU mode i have finally got the machine revived however now the issue seems to be when attempting to install macOS Sequoia via a bootable USB installer or via macOS recovery the machine just keeps freezing and restarting before the installation is complete, usually the installation has just started or is mid way trough before...

Concerns before attempting a Reflow of Laptop's GPU
      by Mr_Nada
I saw some posts at one point talking about doing a reflow but I couldn't find them again so I thought that I would post this here.

I plan on reflowing the GPU of this old HP DV2500 laptop but I want to go over what I have and the steps I have to take to guarantee it will come out fine.

I have a Yihua 8786D 2in1 Rework station, flux (just some paste that I got from an old Radioshack kit), a couple rolls of Kapton tape and a $15 Thermometer +probe (a TM902C from EMR shielding Solutions if its important).
      • The paper that came with the thermometer states that the probe

Attempting Data Recovery WD20EARS series HDD Reads as 0 byte drive.
      by abajor
I was wondering if there is a knowledge base on troubleshooting HDD failures and when it might be viable to try certain repair/recovery techniques.
I recently got a WD20EARS 2TB Drive from a customer in hopes of retrieving data. The drive reads as zero size, I can't hear any head activity but it does appear the platter is spinning I can feel some gyroscopic action picking up the drive.

As a shot it the dark I bought a donor board and swapped the rom chip. Same issue zero byte drive.

I'm assuming that the armature is no longer functional internally so no data can...

novice user attempting first BIOS write on ASUS laptop
      by alphabetty
      Hello first post!

Ok so after an (ASUSTek) optional Windows update, my old ASUS E403NA laptop rebooted and froze in the BIOS menu screen and was unresponsive so after about 30 mins I powered off and back on again. Now i just get a power LED and a black screen, I have tried all the basic suggestions and all the suggestions on the ASUS site, spoke to ASUS support who said I will need to pay for an RMA.

The laptop is worth €50 so I won't be doing the RMA at god knows what price.

So I have seen some videos where people have reprogrammed the BIOS...
