    Replace/Upgrade Thermaltake ATX PSU

    Hi Everyone,

I have a problem and hope someone can point me in the right direction. My current PSU Thermaltake XP550np has problems starting and i'm looking to replace it with a more powerful PSU. I can't match a PSU that common connectors and cables. So far, I have ordered 5 PSU and this is driving me crazy.
After reading a few posts and searching the database, I realize that I'm not as savvy as some of you. Not sure what specs one might need. I will watch this thread and hope for the best.

    Thanks All

Actually, I did mention that I currently have a Thermaltake XP550NP.

Are there any specs you want me to list? IE OS, motherboard, peripherals.

That would help, There haven't been a whole lot of new standard PSU connector types in several years so any PSU made in the last few years of sufficient capacity should have all the standard connectors (SATA, Molex, 24-Pin, 4/8 Pin CPU connector, 6/8 Pin PCI-E (video card) connector, etc.).

I don't see any "special" connectors on a Thermaltake XP550NP that should be difficult to find on any modern PSU, it is a pretty basic low-end PSU, if you still need a floppy-connector (also used on some older video cards) you may have to get an adaptor as they are no-longer standard in many newer PSUs, but moles to floppy connectors are easy to find if needed.

Listing the 5 PSU's you bought and the reason they did not work would be a start.
And all components of your PC.

Thanks for getting back, guys. dmill89, you would think that it isn't hard to match up, but its a bitch for me. The last PSU I bought was the Thermaltake TR2 500W, but it was lacking the plugs for the fans and short on 4 pin power connectors. All of the other PSU I purchased didn't have all of the cables and connectors that are necessary. PerHansson, you're asking for a lot, but I will give it a try.

            OS - XP
            MB - ASUS P4P800-VM Socket478
            PSU - Thermaltake XP550np
            CPU - P4 3.0 GHZ + 3.0 Gb MM
            Radeon Geforce Card

If more info is needed, I'll try to get it.

            Thanks Again

"PerHansson, you're asking for a lot"
-No, I'm not asking for allot, you are asking for allot by still not explaining exactly what hardware you are intending to hook up.

              "Plugs for the fans"
              -What fans
              -How many fans
-Why are you not just connecting them to the mainboard
              -etc etc etc

"short on 4 pin power connectors"
-With the details you provided there would not be a single 4-pin molex connector required.
-But maybe I should use my magic crystal ball and figure out that your AGP graphics card needs a 4-pin floppy molex connector?

it may be simpler to fix the old psu.

Time to recap it then. Hopefully the 5VSB hasn't gone ballistic in it yet. I have the same PSU (also goes by the name of TR2-430W). It's a low-end PSU - not really capable of 430 Watts. Last review I read rated it at 350 Watts max. That said, a recap will make it even better than it was before.

If not, probably any 300 Watt PSU will do, looking at your system specs. Just find one that has all of the connectors you need.

^This, as Per Hansson said we don't have a magic crystal ball, and it is hard to make recommendations without knowing exactly what you need. That being said given the age of the system and specs on the TR2-430W (XP550np) which has 9 molex connectors, I would guess your issue is you need a PSU with a bunch of molex connectors which many newer PSUs would not have since the prevalence of SATA drives has reduced the number of molex connectors on most newer PSUs. If that is your issue you have three options:
                    1. Buy a PSU with enough connectors for your needs (if you truly need 9 molex connectors it will be very hard to find that unless you buy used/NOS from Ebay or a much higher wattage unit than you need, but if you can get by with 6 molex connectors you have a fair number of options).
                    2. Buy molex splitters these should give you the connections you need.
                    3. Fix your current PSU (there is a good chance a re-cap will do it, these PSUs didn't have the best caps and failures are pretty common, but like momaka said realize it is really a 300-350w unit and don't expect to actually get 430w out of it (for any extended length of time).

^ That's 250W DC tops real draw at full steam, any decent 300W PSU will do.

You can plug fans to the mobo fan headers, I run a P4P800 with three 120mm fans daisy-chained to the mobo CPU_FAN header, and controlled by Speedfan.

Also you should read this from post #15 onwards, these mobos have an Achilles' heel: https://www.badcaps.net/forum/showthread.php?t=25996

Thank you gentlemen, you have given me some ideas. Also, p hansonn, I am not a child. Actually, I'm 60 this year. You beed to dial back on the caffeine. You're type of condescending help is not needed in this thread. Please, stay out unless you can find a civil tongue and mind.I'm off to another board where people might have patience for an old noob. Hello every body, I found a bad main on this tv so I ordered a replacement and I installed the new one and powered up the tv to find a dead tv with flashing red/green power led. I contacted the seller and was told I need to upgrade the firmware in order for the new main board to work.

How do I upgrade a tv that is dead wont power up?
