    Re: LH Research PSU faulty?

But most likely the cost of the capacitors is less than the cost of a scope.
I don't need it just to measure ripple in this PSU, I have other electronics (some of it tube-based) that I need a scope for anyways.

Anyway, for recapping it is not really necessary.

Cool...........so you wouldn't use the scope once then, let it collect dust Then defintely it's worth it for you to get a scope. Btw, what kind of tube equipment do you have?I restore and collect old tube radios and tv's,and vintage amps. And yes you should have a scope for recapping, simply so you can check to see how well your new capacitors are working by measuring ripple and make adjustments/repairs to reduce the ripple if necessary.

I got an older Westinghouse tube tv with a spare 17" tube sitting in storage that has a picture that won't spread out vertically, A portable Motorola tube radio that fades in and out every so often...and a few other gizmos related to my Shortwave and CB radios. I also want to test a myth that if you try hard enough, you can actually get a tv image on your scope (seen in an old 50's electronics magazine repair section).

Cool.....I have a few tube sets..a 1949 motorola 12inch roundie,1957 rca 12inch to name a few.I will post pics latter.Your problem with the westinghouse is the old paper caps, they are leaky,If you have the model number for your set then I may have a schematic and sams folder for your set in PDF.It's good that you have a spare CRT for that set as they are scarce as hens teeth. As for your tube radio the same appies, replace the paper caps. There is a place in canada called just radios, www.justradios.com that sells replacement film and higher voltage electrolytics for tube equipment,They are reasonable I buy from them.I saw that article too but have never tried to do it.

I had a feeling it was the paper caps as the tubes were checking out okay.
I don't need schematics, My gramps used to repair Westinghouse appliances and he has a whole wall filled with Westinghouse service manuals.
I also have two boxes of tubes here and another in Ontario.
