• Re: Bipolar Capacitor In A Pinch

    I second that,done that many times when I needed a bi-polar capactior.

  • Re: Loose Cap causing 2 dead USB ports?

Sorry for the wait I WILL post pictures tomorrow,As for the schematic of the usb ports, you may have some luck getting a datasheet for the usb controller chip at www.datasheet4u.com and you could then trace the +5v line.Other that that I know that some early boards had the +5v rail feeding the ports directly and today most of the boards use the usb chip to switch the +5v off and on and some well desinged boards have seperate 5v regulators feeding each pair of usb portsRe: Loose Cap causing 2 dead USB por... /> Sorry for

Also look for miniature fuses near the usb ports, they come in all sizes and varieties, some look like SMD resistors some look like tantalum capacitors and some look like ceramic disc capacitors.I will post some pics of microfuses on a mobo tomorrow. Most boards have fuses protecting the +5v line for the usb.If you dont find any fuses and the cap replacement doesn't restore usb function you can always turn off the on board usb controllers and use a PCI usb 2.0 card.

  • Re: Would just recapping solve my problem - desoldered MOSFETs

I second that, replace all of the filters in the vrm circuit, that was the reason why the fet shorted out to begin with, they usually dont short for no good reason.

Yep although cheaper sets had them in series string and a single or double selenium diode line doubler power supply, therefore eliminating the power transformer....

  • Re: 20 to 24-pin PSU Converters, anyone using them?

Yes they do make those adapters and they do work, you just have to make sure that your psu can handle the extra 12v load. And yes you must use the atx 12v connector because that powers the cpu vrm....

  • Re: Need help identifying 20yr old lytics

I would suspect the low voltage supply for the ripple you are experencing on the above monitor, probabaly a dried out cap in the power supply. However yes I think low esr caps would be a benefit due to the extremely sensitve oscillator in these monitors. What year is this from,it looks to be late 70's because of the fly using an external doubler diode but you should be able to replace these with GOOD quality modern general purpose caps.

  • Re: Akai Reel To Reel Capacitors

I encontered these multisection ac rated lytics in a early 50's 12" stromberg-carlson tv,that had the am/fm radio built in.What a monster that set was,the chassis weighed at least 50lbs alone The power transformer was giant, because the set had two 5u4's in the power supply. Not to mention the hv section had two 1b3's.That was honestly the most complex tube set I ever restored. Now as for your capacitor problem you should be able to replace those with film capacitors of the appropriate value/voltage.You should be able to find those film...

    Re: Sony CPD 420GS

Yes FET's are three pin transistors and are usually mounted on heatsinks, just check the large transistors on the board or that are mounted on heatsinks, dont worry about the small half-circle shaped ones yet.As for trying to find your FET I may have a good used one here as I have scrapped some newer sony CRT monitors due to obselecence and may have saved the HOT from them. Here I couldn't even get 10-15 dollars for a 19" CRT monitor so most of them get scrapped....

    Re: Sony CPD 420GS

Yes probabaly shuts down before the tube can warm up.Yes you probabaly have bad connections and that was causing you to lose deflection,I would inspect the entire horizontal section.Resolder the drive transformer and carefully inspect all other conections in the horizontal section.Don't be surprised if you have to resolder almost every connection, some of the older sony tv's and studio monitors I worked on I had to resolder nearly all of the connections in the set, especially the studio monitors that had run 24/7 for 7-10 years due to the heat.As for the replacement...

I searched for those numbers but nothing comes back. You are going to have to replace the board or look for another one of these monitors that is junk, ebay is your friend, look for one with a busted panel.

Sony doesn't make capacitors. They look like knockoff sam youngs or ucc's...

  • Re: AcBel 450w problem??

Ok then you found your problem.I would check the caps in the defective psu. When your power supply shuts down do you have to disconnect the AC supply from it before it turns back on?

    And yet another one....
This one is a samsung lcd power supply/inverter from late 2005.The Two brown caps are 1000uf 10v CapXon GL series and the other one is a 820uf 25v SAMXON GF series....nasty ...

  • Re: The Hall of Shame - Badcaps Photo Montage

Bulged nasty SAMXON capacitors on a power supply/inverter from a MAG lcd monitor. The two small capacitors in the inverter section are 50uf 25v samxon GK series. And the other two in the secondary of the smps are 470uf 25v samxon GF series. The failure of the two in the inverter section caused the Ic in the picture to become a toasty critter. The monitor was manufactured in mid 2005...

    Wan901,
As for your power supply issue, you need to try another power supply in your computer and see how it reacts. What kind of caps does your ACbel have in it?Also it doesnt matter what the light on your MB says, you need to make a few voltage checks and try another power supply.

Kc8's right there will be another shorted fet,I forget on which heatsink the fet was on,Try not use any NTE replacements for power trans. or FET's they don't last very long,go with an original part. And since your HOT is shorted it may be a good idea to check the flyback for burns or signs of arcing, look close to where the anode lead exits the fly. Also do as suggested and resolder the HDT and connections surrounding it.As for pulling the HOT from your other monitor,Probabaly not as it may be a different chassis but you can check.

I wouldn't trust yageos on anything,I remember finding 5 of them bulging on an older amd board from around mid 2000.Other than that I havent seen them on any newer boards...
