    rocketfish rf-700wps2 wont power up

so I have this power supply in my computer that has provided me four years of great use. The other day I noticed my computer was off. Upon trying to power it up I get fans for a split second and then nothing. If I disconnect the main connector off the motherboard in jumper the green wire to the black the fan came on on the power supply and it worked but I tried it again and it won't come on it just makes a buzzing noise really quick and then shuts down. I tried a different power supply of my motherboard and there's no problem with the computer. I should know this working on plasma and LCD TVs but what causes a condition like this I don't see any bulging caps. Although I haven't really gotten into the power supply too much yet I'm suspecting a low voltage condition that caused the power supply not to want to work under load. Anyone have any ideas?

I'll post photos soon. I noticed this uses a Cm6800g ic. Wonder if the cap on the vcc pin went south. unloaded it seems to work okay but connected or loaded down it shuts down immediately. Nothing physically blown and all mosfets test ok

Could be a PFC issue too, if PFC is not working you may get too low a voltage on the main capacitor to let it run with a load.

Check the voltage on both of them while running with and without load? Be careful on primary side...

whata shit design, look at the small board on the far side with 2 small caps up against the heatsink!

Re: rocketfish rf-700wps2 wont power up

All is well now, PFC ciruit ok, recapped the monitor circuit, some moderately high ESR in a few lytics on the board. After confirmed repair, powered the PC up and had a 12v regulator go up in smoke on the mainboard (MSI model). replaced this from an old crappy HP/COMPAQ mobo. All works well now. Im on the computer typing this.

So probably what happened is the PS spiked the mobo and in turn seriously stressed a 12v switching regulator.

And yes stj on that board where you see the two capacitors up against the heat sink that was one of the main problems too much heat dried them out ESR when high causing the monitor ic to shut down prematurely. So yes. Shit design
