    Monster Power AVS2000SS & HTPS7000MKII

Recently purchased "used" Monster Power units and both have issues. Monster tells me they don't service units, only do warranty exchanges. They don't sell parts either! So here I am back with you great folks to see if someone could lend a hand.

The AVS2000SS has a wicked 50Hz audible hum that can be heard through connected components. I guess the power cord must have been nicked or cut as it has been spliced with CRIMP connectors! I haven't unwound the mile of dollar store electrical tape over the connection to see whats what yet. I hope I get lucky. But other than hum and power cord it looks like its doing its job well keeping the line voltage right on the money.

The HTPS7000MKII has a bad digital display. Comes on sporadically, single digit here and there. Taps do nothing.

Haven't done anything to either except plug in and check voltages, apply loads with the audio system at peak pressures and it didn't skip a beat. Would like to keep these, any help would be greatly appreciated.

That AVS2000 is nothing more than a motorized VARIAC to regulate the output voltage, it will hum real bad when the AC has high harmonic, the problem with TOROID which will hum like crazy the AC is not symmetrical (DC offset).

Thanks for the response but these are made to reduce line noise and control voltage. I have seen several of these in other systems that were crystal clear. Now granted I have a tri-amped rack setup with about 900 a channel, but I never experienced hum with a $50 Belkin gang box. New these are $3500+, Monster is useless as they couldnt even tell me a service location.

Unfortunately you are wasting your money. These units will do nothing for a good audio amplifier. The large variac will act slightly as a filter, but not much more than the transformer inside the amplifier. Besides, a variation in the supply voltage to the amplifier is not corrected instantly, and even if it were, the amplifier will rarely require the peak voltage from the capacitor bank.

I am talking about mechanical hum from the VARIAC. You can also hear the servo motor running when it tries to adjust the voltage.

Yes, and I'm saying that kind of adjustment is not going to make any difference. But audiophiles do like spending money on unusual tweaks.

I was given this TV from my great uncle. He said it just wouldn't turn on one day out of nowhere, replaced the TV, and gave it to me to possibly fix and use for myself.

Upon bringing it home and plugging it up, it showed a standby light.

I powered it on and without a flashlight, the display showed the "V" but the lighting is very dim, but visible.

The screen seems to blackout and stay black, but with a flashlight I can see the display.

With my Playstation 4 connected via HDMI, and running a game I can hear sound.

Microsoft Surface Pro (5th gen) model 1796 - no power
              by PantherDave
              Hi all!

I'm trying to troubleshoot a Microsoft Surface Pro (5th gen) model 1796 that won't power on. Motherboard model is M1007506-015. My priority is retrieving data, but the SSD is integrated so it looks like if I can't repair it it'll need to go to a data recovery company. I've done a little basic board repair before, but nothing this advanced until now. So please forgive my ignorance in advance. 😅

I found the boardview for this laptop in the forums here, and am able to open it on my PC with FlexBV.

              Hi all,

TL;DR - this laptop is driving me nuts with the oddball power-related behaviors. Appreciate any insight you can provide!

I'm experiencing a power issue on an Asus Probook P5440UF-XB74. Although I've worked with electronics and computers for decades, this is my first attempt at getting into motherboard-level component troubleshooting. Any help the community can provide is greatly appreciated!

A few weeks ago I was using the laptop (on battery power) for a Zoom meeting. The battery was running very low (long meeting) but I wasn't worried about...

Desoldering gun station modified to use a 18 volt @ 20 amp switching power supply
              by sam_sam_sam
I have wanting to do this project for quite sometime now and I finally found a switching power supply that will work on this desoldering gun station ZD-915 that the original switching power supply took a shit and just was not worth trying to fix it because this switching power is not quite big enough to handle the heater element and the vacuum pump

One note when I tested the switching power supply and the voltage control board I noticed that this desoldering gun heat up much faster than the original switching power supply which I was really surprised by to the point that I might buy...
