Thanks for the advice on getting this fixed, its appreciated.
It took a while but we got there, sourcing components can be difficult especially with minimum order values, and spurious meter readings!
I checked the batteries and they were ok, also checked some 1/4w resistor values which were correct, didn't have any 2w types to try.
The next purchase is a new dmm.
