Do power supplies that use general purpose caps have a problem using low ESR caps with a higher ripple rating (but capacitors that aren't polymer and thus possibly mismatching in capacitance)? Or does that go for half-bridge PSUs with older designs such as the aforementioned two-transistor 5VSB circuit?

Rather, if a power supply has general purpose capacitors in some outputs and low ESR ones in others, does it mean that only general purpose capacitors are ever suited for recapping general purpose capacitors that fail in any PSU?

Depends on how low you go. If you take just entry-level low ESR caps (i.e. Panasonic FC, Nichicon PW, and Chemicon LXV/LXY/LXZ) or the next level lower ESR (Nichicon HE, Chemicon KY), it should be fine. Further lower ESR (Nichicon HD, Chemicon KZE, Rubycon ZL, Panasonic FR) will likely work fine too, but the output ripple may be higher than with the general purpose caps. And then there's Panasonic FM, which is just at the edge of what a PSU would accept as low ESR and still work. Anything with lower ESR than Panasonic FM is usually motherboard-grade low ESR and may cause problems in some PSUs.

2-transistor 5VSB circuits are a special case. They don't have a PWM controller and they *usually* work fine even with motherboard-grade caps.

      No.
Like I mentioned above, SMPSs will work fine with low ESR caps most of the time as long as you don't go too low.

I think they are designed for (entry level) low esr caps. They put general purpose caps to reduce cost, but that's another story.

          Very true, actually.

Well, you call it entry-level, I call it PSU type. Many manufacturers actually talk about them being suitable for switching power supplies and sometiems even PSU-type

Below them are general purpose (many of which couldn't even handle 100 kHz so they should not even be in PSU!), above them VRM suitable. Sure, over time also caps fiting between these cathegories came.

As for the main cathegories, you usually are OK just with knowledge of which type goes where (well latelly that is also not true as they not only use general purpose caps on place of low-ESR, but they also DESIGN controlling circuits for GP crap from the very begining). As for the models between main types, you really better read datasheet and compare with what was inside before.

              Samsung 245B PLUS - BN44-00195A - bang and smoke - solved - tips
              by cnti
              Hi.
BacCaps forum is awesome - thank YOU ALL for sharing knowledge!

This is about DONG YANG PSU BN44-00195A failiure in Samsung 245BPLUS. It started with bang and smoke from the back of LCD. Downloaded diagram BM44-00192A - a bit different but I will use all parts names from this diagram [and real PSU].
BIG CAP CP801 had 315V, on standby pin 5,2V. After shorting S_B ON (through 3,3k ohm resistor) 24V and 5,3V were missing, on CP801 was 312V.

              RM801 [real PSU: RM801 - 0,22 ohm 1W] - FAIL
              burned, measured 10M ohm.

              QM801 [real PSU:...

              Diagnose real-vintage Strong-Hammer arcade machine
              by edugimeno
              Hi there!
My friend wants me to help him repair his old-real-vintage strong-hammer machine. Well it's only 90% real as the force applied doesn't lift the weight itself but it is measured and it moves a motor that lifts the weight

I am attaching several pictures of the machine.
It basically has 2 sides, left side has
              • 2 x 220->12+24v transformers
              • 2 relays (1 moves motor UP, other moves motor DOWN)
              • IGF and breakers for safety
Right side is shown on pictures. It has 3 boards ( top-down)
              • Logic board. Receives 24AC and recitifies it into DC. Contains a uC (M80C85)

MSI PRO B660M-G DDR4 - real bios dump from board needed (no stock bios)
              by DynaxSC
Hi, I have an MSI PRO B660M-G DDR4 board with damaged BIOS and i need a bios dump from a real board, along with MAC, UUID and Serial Number info (eg. a BIOS screenshot and pictures from the board stickers).

I need to reconstruct the bios on my board, based on another bios image form a real board - meaning a bios image containing MAC address, UUID and Serial number. A stock BIOS is not suffiecient, as it is impossible to discover where the MAC, UUID and SerialNumber are stored. Tried with a similar board, but there are too much differences, and the stock BIOS is missing a lot of...

Need real mobo dump of BIOS v402 for ASUS PRIME Z590-A - stock image no help
              by DynaxSC
              Hi,

I have a serious problem to program the Z590 chipset SRAM with a Management Engine after replacing the chipset.
The new chipset is factory new and is not containing any Management Engine. Any attempts to program it into the chipset under Windows ends with a failure (eg. Error 20: Management Engine Device not present, or something similar).
Due to the lack of the ME several ports on the board, including all M.2 ports aren't working, booting OS works only on USB. So it's now other way, as to program the chipset with a ME.

Usually on ASUS boards it worked...

2004/05 AGP GPUs: Repair Tips and Tricks
              by SapientLion
              Hello, everyone!

This is my first actual post on this forum. I don't know anyone here nor have any knowledge on proper etiquette that is supposed to be applied here... So, bear with me and my mistakes. I'll try my best. Regardless, here's my story.

A few days ago, i discovered and managed to purchase two AGP x8 GPUs (ASUS Extreme N6600 [NVIDIA GeForce 6600] and ASUS AX1650PRO AGP [ATI Radeon X1650 Pro] ), from a trusted seller, for dirt cheap, which were released way back in 2004/05. They were primarily used for graphics design and 3D modelling. As far as know,...
