    Widetech "The Max" 550

I took two of these home from work a few weeks back, boith wer pulled from customer's PCs. My boss didn't want them , thinking that they were probably just cheap generics no-name units. After opening one up I found this:

Well, Widetech didn't try that hard to hide the OEM. It's from the Great Wall of China (pun very much intended), although it looks like the flash on my camera hid the logo. It's actually just near the AC in socket. Looks like we have an ERL 35 transformer and reasonable heat sinks

Horrible Electrolyitc Capacitors on the primary *sigh*

Nicon on the secondary *sigh*. The rectifiers used are 30A for the 5V, 16A for the 12V and 20A for the 3.3V. The fan is wired straight to 12V

Speaking of fans, it's an off-brand - ever cool

but wait a minute let's just get a better look at that primary heat sink...

Well, I'll be darned. The only transistors there are the main switchers, no 5vsb transistor to speak of, just an NCP1014 chip in it's place. looks like we don't have a two transistor 5vsb circuit.

I reckon it just needs some better caps and maybe a fan controller and some better rectifiers on the secondary and it would be half decent as a 300 Watter.

    yay! a properly engineered 5vsb!

IMHO, you ought to recap it... good for gerneral purpose machines.

Not bad at all. Could probably do 400W peak, 350W continuous (depending on what the primary switchers are).

Will do its labeled rating if you put some proper diodes in the secondary.

              They are rated at 12A

I'm gonna replace the secondary rectifiers with 30A schottky rectifiers (I'll leave the 30A schottky on the 5v rail in place).

Greatwall is actually a fairly competent OEM who is currently pumping out some very good units:

A few modifications later, we now have 30A schottky rectifiers on ALL of the rails, Nichicon HE, Panny FR and Samxon RS caps, sleeved cables and a fan controller.

I gave one of them a really cool (pardon the pun) mod to the fan. In fact, I think it look so cool, I can't help but show it off - 20 LEDs in the fan - that's more than an Enermax Apollish.

I scavenged the fan controller from a Deer which I exploded on the tester.

I didn't worry too much about keeping the ESR the same. If it does 300W in spec, I'll be happy. Besides, These obscure no-name cap brands, probably don't even have websites, so I don't know what the ESR of the originals was. See if you can find the website for nicon

EDIT: Fan controllers are easy to make. There's an easy design at http://www.heatsink-guide.com/conten...=control.shtml
