APC Smart UPS 1400 XL troubleshooting

I got home this evening and was greeted by a loud fan noise coming from my SmartUPS 1400 XL. The unit itself was not that hot however the battery compartment was probably 50C (touch). There was no load on the UPS today I turned the PC that was plugged into it off this morning. Also I do not believe that we lost power today since my other ups is absolutely cold and that has a running PC. I got the unit about 2 years ago on eBay. The batteries at that time were supposed to be new although the unit was a refurbished. I tried to remove the batteries but it appears that is not easy since there is no tab to pull them out.

Edit: I got the batteries out. They were still pretty hot. There is no bulging. I measured 24.35V for the 2 x 12V batteries in series with a fluke DVM and no load.

BTW, I have degrees in EE and CS but for the 15 years I have worked since my education I have done mostly programming so sad to say I am forgot quite a bit.

I believe this has to do with a too high float voltage.

It looks like I have some reading to do.

Dead / weak batteries are the usual cause. 2-3 years is also typical.

Thanks, you are correct. I believe 1 of the batteries has a dead cell. I just measured 10.92V on one battery and 13.2V on the other.

A cheapo load tester or a carbon pile type is a good investment. Doesn't have to be accurate as hell, just enough to load it and find the crappy battery.

Always replace both. One will follow the other bad one to its grave shortly.

DIY: Modified smart charger for all types of batteries
            by dbuergi
            Hi all,

sometimes i'm in need of a charger / tester for very small batteries and even if my multimeter doesn't show anything there is a chance that a smart charger helps to revieve. I'm happy with my Keenstone smartcharger and i made a small mod just to use it with smaller batteries like in smartwatches or even camera batteries with special contacts.

Soldering wires on the charger contacts and using needles as probes. I covered both with a shrink hose with integrated solder.
My first work was to bring my Samsung watch battery back to life with was not recognized...

            Hello, all.

            Cyberpower Battery Backup Unit.

I bought two new ML18-12 batteries through Amazon (They have already refunded my money for the two batteries as we thought the batteries might have been bad.)
When I got them in, they were not fully charged. I connected them to the UPS and waited 24 hours before connecting any networking equipment.
In parallel, they read 24v, but within 24 hours, the meter on the front of the unit dropped from 4 to 3 bars on the battery charge indicator.
Checking the voltage, it was down to 22v.
            I quickly removed everything...
