Like the title says, what's the point of all the glue I see strung over EVERYTHING inside of most PSU's. Seems like the manufacturers go a little glue-happy at times!

My dad thinks so that loose components in power supplies will survive shipping without being knocked off. There are lots of glue around caps with some power supplies, and that drives me nuts.My gaming PC:

The reson coils and caps are covered in glue is to eliminate the high-pitched tone they can otherwise create which is very annoying
It's common for older TV sets to have this problem; the glue has after the years gotten solid and thus does not prevent the multi kilohertz signal from causing for example the ferrite core in a coil to start moving and creating noise..."The one who says it cannot be done should never interrupt the one who is doing it."Comment

I worked an assembly line job in a xerox plant, late 70's.
Next to me was the power supply line, 30 women, soldering, glueing and talking a mile a minute.

The glue is for mechanical stability, on lytics and on the toroid-core inductors. The switch frequency for modern switchers (late 70s onward) is above 20KHz, i.e. not audible (many current switchers operate above 100KHz).PeteS in CA

I know many folks on this forum warn against conductive glue and suggest removing it immediately upon site. I'm here to vouch and say these people know what they are talking about. To be more accurate, the glue isn't intended to be and doesn't actually start out conductive. It gets conductive as it is heated by components that get hot. The glue starts out to be a light tan color but as it is exposed to heat, it gets darker and darker until it is a dark brown. I have found that it becomes conductive at the point that it reaches a light brown color on darker.

This is a guide that I am writing for helping others to replace their MEC1503 EC chip if it breaks (or to get around an inconvenient prompt to the BIOS). Just wanted to clear up a misunderstanding of mine (or what I expect is one). Isn't the 12V rail from the 24 pin, EPS and PCIE separated? IE if I put a power resistor on the ATX 12V pin that is not going to load, thus tell me if the EPS or PCIE rails are fine?
I was recently watching ArIs from Hardware Busters video on how to properly test ATX PSUs without using 5 figure Croma substations.
The PCB adapter he used breaks out the 12, 5 and 3.3V pins from the 24 pin and gives you banana plugs to connect to. That is a bit useless is it not? Aren't... -
