Help with Flashing HP 655 Laptop Bios and info on how Bios works?

In the past I have repaired some motherboards that did not Post by de-soldering the Bios chip and flashing the bios from my PC.

So today I am trying to do the same with a HP 655:

    pn: 010172W00-600-G
    NEWTON_BR_HPC
    MV_MB_V1

Of course it could have another fault and in fact the caps lock led flashes once indicating CPU error but I found with previous ones error could be wrong if Bios was corrupt.

CPU is soldered so cannot remove to test...

Or it could be Graphics etc, but often it still boots.

So I saved the bios off the chip first. It is 8 Megabytes, then I proceeded to download the one off the HP site and removed the .bin but it is 4 MB, and so are all the others on the web and this site.

When I flash any of them the machine will not even turn on. When I flash back the one I saved it will turn on.

When I look at the one I saved in the programmer it has some english in it like copyright near the top and name of file near the bottom but in the downloaded dumps there is only illegible code.

    Do the dumps need decrypting?

When I scroll down my saved one some areas are blank so I thought maybe the actual code is only 4MB, is it just compressed the dumps off the web?

How can I use these dumps as even if the bios is not corrupt the web versions should enable it to turn on like with my saved copy.

Any info on how bios's work would be appreciated?

The last one I downloaded was a sony one off this site and it was 8MB and it worked.

Also the chip off the board does not work, when I erase and flash it always says mis-match after verifying making me think this is the problem. I am since using a chip off a scrap board which works with the original bios I save and turns on but still no POST.

    Many thanks.

Well I've figured it out now, it does need decrypting, I followed this video:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_c...ature=emb_logo

Sadly though board is still faulty, same as before, turns on and flashes caps led once to indicate cpu fault.

Here is the decrypted bios for anyone else wishing to program the chip in a usb programmer.

Its not a ZIP file just rename the end to .bin

Re: Help with Flashing HP 655 Laptop Bios and info on how Bios works?

        If I understand wour problem......
        probook 655 g1 ?
Can you upload the original bios ? so it's possible identify the correct BID and try to clear or repair (in bios section )
Today, unlike in the past, only a part of what is commonly called bios is provided for the upgrade. What is called bios is composed of several parts , for example:
        https://winraid.level1techs.com/t/gu...lization/31277
        1 - flash descriptor
        2 - Me region
        3 - Gbe region
4 - Bios region (which is the downloadable part from the manufacturer's website)
It is possible to use tools to recreate the entire dump but it is much easier to download or ask for a copy from the bios section on this site. So the first answer is that it is not compressed but only a part of a whole.
However, a programmer is needed to reprogram the chip.

Re: Help with Flashing HP 655 Laptop Bios and info on how Bios works?

Hi, I used a bios dump off this website which was encrypted. After decrypting the laptop now turns on as before with the single led flash (CPU Error Code).

Do you not think this is the whole bios?

On the HP support website after entering the serial it states it is this model:

          HP 655 Notebook PC.

          I have attached my dump.

When I compare beginning of my dump and decrypted bios they have the same copyright text in so it is definitely encrypted as it is not in the encrypted version.

But I have just compared them and the downloaded one ends a point and then has lots of blank section but my dump then starts again later so it does have more data in it!

I have attached my dump if you can make any sense for me?

IT IS NOT a ZIP, rename the end to .bin!

I spent a long time downloading dumps from many sites but all are 4MB and all come encrypted as well and I test a few and can decrypt them and then see the english bits like the copyright at the beginning!

          Many thanks..

Your bios is a 4MB bios from the CQ58 written twice onto the 8MB chip. Your bios should be L72 .Flash the attached bios you will have to use nbdmifit DMI tools if you want your serial number and other info filling in .

Re: Help with Flashing HP 655 Laptop Bios and info on how Bios works?

Ok I'm totally confused now. That bios you gave me I flashed but but now the board will not turn on so I think it is wrong for this board.

Why would my dump be the bios written twice, how could this happen? That dump is from the chip as soon as I received the laptop, I am not sure how it could have written itself twice but it does appear to be that way. I searched in HXD Hex editor for some lines and they did appear twice!

                Cheers.

EDIT: try this bios. Its 4MB ,thats what size the bios chip should be,i suspect it was replaced with an 8MB chip and the programmer wrote it twice ?

Hi mate, sorry if theres been confusion, I have this:

                    HP 655:

                    pn: 010172W00-600-G
                    NEWTON_BR_HPC
                    MV_MB_V1

Which is what I wrote at the top of the thread, only another person wrote G1 in one of the replies.

When I enter the serial number in HP support it states HP 655.

In that case do we think I have in deed written the correct bios after extracting?

It does turn on after that with same error led.. Can we surmise that the LED single flash is in deed a CPU/APU fault? I tried heating both the APU and the chipset chip but no difference.

                    Many thanks.

It was the G1 that threw me off track the 655 and 655 G1 are completely different models.

Wait sorry you are referring to the part number, that is correct but the HP support states HP 655 when I input the serial no.

I notice this board was also in the CQ58 but so was another intel version with a socketed Intel chip maybe that is the G1?

Unless anyone has any other ideas then I'm inclined to think it is the APU fault. There are second hand boards on ebay so probably get one of those.

                                Hello everyone,

I am still a beginner and want to learn more about flashing bios. First of all, thank you very much for the tutorials made on this forum it helps a lot.

Lets get straight to the point. When I try to flash the bios of my Lenovo X270 it restarts several times and always returns to the bios that was there at the beginning. When I get the bios from someone on the forum and write it to the bios chip, I always have the same serial numbers. I have the feeling that the pc is reflashing itself. Where could this come from? How to avoid this problem?

I have successfully attached to the flash chip (W25Q128JVSQ) on the motherboard with a CH341A programmer and made several modifications using Intel FIT (e.g., allow software SPI write) without bricking. I was also able to boot to a modified GRUB shell where I attempted to edit many BIOS security related options like BIOS Guard/Lock, Flash Signature Override, ME FW Image Re-Flash, etc.

Unfortunately, some of these modifications like to Intel BIOS Guard failed because it is fused into the PCH. Also,...

                                Hi everyone,

I have been doing hardware repair as a hobby for some years now and recently decided to learn about repairing laptops as a fun challenge.

I managed to get my hands on a "HP Pavilion Gaming 15-ec2523nd" notebook that only shows a white power LED and doesnt respond to anything.

After initial testing I concluded the bios seems to be corrupted since all voltages are normal and there are no shorts. HP has a feature for a bios restore from USB with winkey+B for this model. This did not work.
