Re: Macbook Pro 820-00840-a not powering on

I would just apply ample flux and use a wide tip on the soldering iron and attempt to nudge it with tweezers, little at a time. With enough heat, the part should start to shift, little at a time. Heat up one side and then the other - heat will also travel through the part but work quickly and you should be able to remove it.

On my wish list are a good pair of the soldering iron tweezers but there may be better tools out there.

Do not even use the hot air at all. Try this idea first.

Alternatively, blow the air in the opposite direction -> towards the edge of the PCB and away from the plastic connector. That should also work out ok.

A bonus if you can apply an aluminum foil shield over the connector or polymide (kapton) tape over the sensitive areas.

Hi mon2 I had to retreat back to the tranches again for this one and restrategise, the J6602 connector got me pickled, I think the hot air for this one was a no go because of it. So I restrategised to try this, I applied ample flux as you suggested and took some solder (lead free) and applied a small portion to the soldering iron, whilst on I then started to apply the soldering iron on the side away from the J6602 connector. And voila, after some swiping back and forth on one side the capacitor just popped off! Can you see the issue, see below for the image? HAHA.

The side shown on the image was the underside of the capacitor so this was not easily visible on the board when testing. Injecting voltage was the revelation.

Measured again the resistance to ground (black probe to ground point and red point to F7000 PIN #2) and short gone!

I don't suppose mon2/anyone here has a C6405 spare capacitor laying around for sale? I do not have any donor board so I do not have one immediately available. It is a 22uF/20% tolerance/25V/0805-1 (X5R-CERM).

Good job! Would not have guessed this region to have the bad cap.

        https://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/mlccs...citors/9159303

will work just fine for your logic board.

Any chance you have a VAT # ? If yes, could drop ship it from Arrow.

Update - wait! They want to charge what for these parts ?? Hang tight...

Wow - the parts are pricey. This part will not be missed to be honest.

        You have some options:

        1) if you have a VAT# - could drop ship it to you from Arrow (free shipping)
        2) source them from RS Electronics but they are over priced (in my opinion) - we buy these in high volumes and see a totally different price structure - 'free' shipping (buried in the price)
        3) leave the part off - doubt it very much if you will hear a quality difference on the amplifier if the part is not present
        4) would consider to ship you some but the Canada Post fee to you is more than the parts are worth so best to source it locally
        5) Digikey & Mouser are possibly good choices but then you have to pay for shipping

Hi mon2 thanks for all your suggestions, i tried a couple of places online including Digikey & Mouser and they were all really pricey so i just went ahead and ordered one from eBay, the ebay seller is still not local to me, they are located in the EU but its the best price and delivery lead time that i could find. I really do need to order an assortment of capacitors so i have them on hand for futrue, which is on my next list of things to do.

mon2 thanks for all your help so far and i will be reporting back in once the parts are flown in and have installed them.

MacBook A2442 not powering on – suspecting CD3217, but replacement didn’t help
              by TechSplendid
              Hi All,

I'm working on a MacBook Pro A2442 (14", 2021) that's not powering on. On two out of three USB-C ports, I get 5V and the current briefly ramps up to around 0.210A before dropping to 0.036A. On the third port (JF600), I only get 0.0045A and it stays there.

Initially, I suspected a faulty CD3217 on that port, especially since I noticed signs of previous liquid damage near the JF600 USB connector. I replaced the CD3217 with an UF400 (from an A2442 donor board from the same location). According to the supplier, this should be a compatible version, but the behavior...

MacBook Pro 2018 with Activation Lock

              Hi everyone!

I have a 2018 MacBook Pro (with Sequoia OS) that I've been using for years with no problem. I recently received an M2 MacBook Pro so I'm mostly using it and not the 2018 one, but since a friend of mine needs a computer, I thought I could restore my 2018 and give it brand-new-like to my friend.

I tried using the built-in tool to restore the MacBook (Settings > General > Transfer or restore > Delete) but it got stuck when trying to remove the Find Device configuration (it asked me for the password for my old Apple ID -now I use the same account but...

MacBook Pro A1989 820-00850-A not powering on
              by ErinV
              Hey everyone!

I have a MacBook Pro A1989 with a 820-00850-A board that recently stopped working. I used it overnight to charge my phone, in the morning it didn't turn on, I assumed flat battery but now won't charge and doesn't start at all.

I have fully dissassembled it, when disconnected the battery reads at 0.012V. Even with the battery disconnected the laptop doesn't boot.

The diode voltages around all 4 CD3215's seem fine.

              For all CD3215 (UB300, UB400, U3100 and U3200) I read just above 5V on PP20V_USBC_TA_VBUS, 3.3V on PP3V3UPC_TA_LDO, 1.8V...

              MacBook M1 Pro 14" 2021 A2442 (820-02098) — U2020 getting hot, board not powering on
              by slimmy182
              Hi everyone,

I have a MacBook Pro M1 14” (board 820-02098) with a broken LCD panel (matrix damaged).
The board does not power on — when connected to power it draws about 5.1 V / 0.474 A (~2.45 W) and stays at that level, with no fan spin or display activity.
Using a thermal camera, I noticed that U2020 heats up to over 70 °C shortly after connecting power.
According to the schematic, U2020 is a SN74AVC2T45RSWR (Texas Instruments) 2-bit bidirectional level shifter.
There are no visible signs of liquid damage anywhere on the board.
              Given the broken LCD,...

              by Flasman90
I have a 2020 Macbook Pro A2289 and after many attempts managed to get it into DFU mode, using my older 2017 A1706 Macbook Pro (Running Ventura 13.7.8). However, when attempting 'Restore', it fails at step 4 of 4, showing the following error:

              - "The operation couldn’t be completed. (AMRestoreErrorDomain error -1 - Failed to handle message type StatusMsg (Generic error)) [AMRestoreErrorDomain – 0xA (10)]
