Re: Toshiba Satellite - Locks up when plugged in

Hiya folks... I'm guessing my TOKIN's are dead, but I have an A300 (Celeron) which hard resets soon as you start loading it up (Ubuntu logs in but soon resets, memtest goes on and on and on, Windows doesn't even log in), this is with the power brick in ( and already tested with another brick, same fault ).

If running off the battery and then plugging in the power brick, it'll almost always instantly reset.

Time to crack open the case and fire up the grille..erm, I mean soldering irons?

does it work fine with only battery on?

you need something pointed to prick on the nec/tokin chip

ja, seems to run just fine on the battery. I'll be diving in tonight, plenty of suitable tools to remove it manually, then clean it up, then solder on 10 or so 100uF caps

I am curious to know about what type of 100uf capacitor that you are going to use.

Going to try the following: AVX - TCJA107M004R0200 ( 100uF 1206/CaseA 4V 0.2R ESR ). The nice thing is, even at elevated temps of 125'C they have a 2.7V rating, so that's good.

The ESR might be too much on the high side. Ten of them will be 20mΩ.
The OE128 claims to be 2mΩ.
I can not say for certain that you will have trouble.

Will be interesting to see how it goes. 2mΩ certainly is low, my mistake there in this case, I was thinking the OE128 was ~170mΩ.

btw, nice to see a fellow NQ'er - hope you guys aren't suffering too much from the wet.

Re: Toshiba Satellite - Locks up when plugged in

Okay - I've got a completely different way of doing things now, this just 'came' to me during the night, not sure how well it'll work for everyone though.

Basically afaik the problem with the NEC/TOKIN replacements is that we invariably cook them shortening their lives, so I went with this method to avoid that, not to mention it's easier to install.

                  1 - Take your NEC/TOKIN cap and 3 x ~2cm lengths of braid,
2 - Tin the pads slightly
3 - Attach the braid to the pads **( Yes, I know I've done mine in the middle, because I had already scratched away the solder resist, for non-resistremoval jobs just split the braid down the middle )
                  4 - Trim them up
                  5 - Fold back
6 - Solder to main board.

Helps a lot too if you can preheat the mainboard a bit. I'm using a 100W station to really get the heat down quick, but the board was preheated to about 150'C to help it all along.

Just a checking question (tried to find an answer on this thread but couldn't see a clear one), if I use a 1200uF in place of the 900uF, can that stop it from working as well? It's fine on battery, but won't boot and won't stay on for more than a few seconds with power in. I have a few of the 900's coming in via post, but thought i'd try a 1200uF in this case until they did arrive.

The larger sized capacitor shouldn't be a problem. Im guessing there is too much connection inductance.
The + strips need to be connected to the PCB at both of their ends. The - plate needs to be connected at all of its corners.
It could be done with component lead off-cuts rather than braid.

That's what I was thinking (regarding capacitance ).

I have to say, I'm rather surprised/impressed at just how sensitive the system is. The choice of braid was specifically to try get the inductance and resistance down very low ( more so that I used solder-soaked braid ). In terms of engineering I'd have considered it "marginal", oh well - back to the reflow bench.

                          UPDATE:

Just letting you know the 10 x ceramic option works out nicely here on an A300. Very easy to install as well thanks to them being small (relative to the tantalums). The big downside is that they're fairly expensive, about $30 for a set of 10 here in Australia, so that's twice the price at least on a comparable tantalum option.

                          http://au.element14.com/jsp/search/p...15&Ntt=1601815 ( Kemet C1206C107M9PAC TU )

*NOTE* I did put an thin insulating barrier on the metal plate that goes above them, though there is an airgap I still didn't want to take chances. Kapton tape would work fine.

Today's job. Getting quite quick at doing it this way now. I find using one of those stainless steel spudgers and a 100W station with a broad tip really makes fast work of peeling off those outer cap strips that are left behind when you break off the TOKIN (the spudger is also excellent for breaking off the cap).

I am preferring to use the 10 x 100uF ceramic option because it means I don't have to do any awkward soldering trying to tilt-fit in the larger tantalums.

Kapton tape on top of the caps at the end of course because you really don't want that shorting out.

I fixed the issue with two 470uF Tant Caps to the Tokin cap. I did not remove the Tokin. just added two of the above caps and the issue was resolved.

                              Thanks guys.

                                Hello.
I'm also having the issue you're discussing here in a toshiba L300.
Mine had a OE907 so I look on the web I bought one right away for 10 EUR that arrived next day.
It was a bit difficult to remove the old one and solder the new but I managed to do it and reassemble everything.
but now the board does not boot. I press power led lights up but no image on screen.
I wonder If I ruin the capacitor while trying to solder it, so I put the old one back and it is the same does not boot, no display.
Before I spend more money on capacitors I wonder IF I could try some I have here on older board that have written:

                                330
                                773a d

                                and other:
                                330
                                76Wf d

Anyone could tell-me if they could be applied there?

                                thanks

Although this is a long thread now, its best to read most of it to learn from others' experiences.
The original type of capacitor isn't the preferred replacement. Its easily damaged
while soldering and doesn't last long.
Its best to use low ESR tantalums or ceramic capacitors.

You need to find the data sheet for those capacitors if possible to see that the ESR is 9 milliohms or lower.

I've been reading lots of pages but not all of them, sorry.

I can't find the datasheets of those capacitors because I don't know the brand of them. They are from a hp amd mobile x2 board...
