Asus ROG GL551JM doesn't charge after MOSFET failure

Hello, I have an ASUS ROG GL551JM laptop that recently died.
I took the motherboard out for a quick inspection and probed around to check power rails. On first checking I noticed the 19V main power rail was missing after the first MOSFET. The gate voltage was very low causing high resistance in the MOSFET and only allowing ~0.8V through the MOSFET source. I checked for possible shorts on this power rail but did not find anything suspicious. As a test I removed the MOSFET and shorted the source to the drain and the laptop appeared to power up fine. (I assume this is probably not recommended) However, now the battery would no longer charge. The battery itself is good and is detected with the percentage in Windows, but does not charge. The computer will also run off of the battery without AC adapter.

Looking at the boardview I am trying to piece together why this behavior is occurring and whether this is maybe due to missing voltage at the gate of the first MOSFET? (Since it's only source->drain short). Or perhaps a bad battery killed the charge IC which caused a problem in the first place.

I can take more measurements if needed.
The battery itself is outputting 10.5V and the laptop does power on with the required power rails 19V, 5V, 3.3V, etc.
I have attached the BoardView file (cannot be opened in OpenBoardView due to format but can be opened in BoardViewer).
I was unable to find any complete schematics online, but I did come across a diagram detailing the "power flow" and power-on sequence which I have also attached.

I would like to hear your thoughts.
    Thank you very much!

this is maybe due to missing voltage at the gate of the first MOSFET?

Yes, you yourself has answered. Without the fet, you dont have correct voltage at the gate which in turn will disable charging. So just replace that mosfet and hopefully everything will be fine. Btw, this is the most commom failure on asus mb's.

Thank you! I should also clarify that when I say "first MOSFET" I'm referring to the first MOSFET after the DC-in jack. I will try replacing it today.

Thats well understood even without your clarification

Usually it's the other MOSFET that shorts drain-source-gate. Second one in your case if it's the 1st one that doesn't let current flow through it.

Were you successful in replacing the MOSFET and repairing the laptop? My GL551JM recently died and sounds very similar to your issue. Battery light started flashing and battery won't charge. Will discharge to 0 and shut off. Laptop won't power on using the AC adapter with the battery at 0 or with the battery removed. Looked at the motherboard or anything obvious (burnt components, loose connections etc). AC adapter is working (has voltage on volt meter) and tried a new battery.

ASUS ROG Zephyrus GPU Mosfet repeat failure
              by MicroSMD Lab
The board number is GU502DU. I repaired this a couple weeks ago and it came back with the same issue, same mosfet failed (PQH9201). I'm hoping that the GPU was spared this time.
I used the same replacement part (purchased from Mouser) and I'm certain the soldering was done properly since it took just as much effort to remove as before. What could cause this same mosfet to fail? I'm thinking if it was unsuitable then the others would fail too. I looked for similar failures on YTube and the mosfet was replaced with AOE6930 in one instance and AOE6932 in the other but it's possible that the...

Asus X712EA 3 volts after the first mosfet
              by AppleLover123
              Hey guys,

i have a asus motherboard here and as the title says after the first mosfet (in the picture) there is nothing more than 3.15v.
I injected 19v and max. 1 amp at the charging port and there is not voltage drop or smth. It's just taking 19v and 1 milliamp.
Then i tried to inject 19v and max 1amp after the current sensor and there it first takes 19v and 4 milliamps and after 2 seconds it is taking nothing (no current).
I measured on the coils on board everything seems fine. Also the main power rail is not shorted (infinite resistance).
              Now i thought something...

              Asus GA502D keeps blowing mosfet
              by Scotchmist
I have an Asus GA502D, it had a blown mosfet which I replaced and the laptop booted into windows, a few mins later it shut off, the same mosfet was blown. I thought maybe just a bad mosfet but same thing happened again, a few mins in windows and shuts off.

I have removed the mosfet and can run the laptop no problem

              The MOSFET is FDPC5018SG

Can anyone point me in the direction of what could be the cause of this, could it be the controller rt3663bc?

              Thanks

ASUS TUF FA506IV-AS76 vram mosfet short, then battery cant charge
              by jkyoho
I recently fixed a FA506IV cam with Vram mosfet short on Vin(19v)to ground. Got both mosfet replaced and now laptop could turns on and GPU everything works but battery not charging. Battery status shows 100% on both BIOS page and Windows system.
Measured voltage got 0.3v on battery red lead not going up. charging mosfet gate low and 19v not passing through inductor.
I also tried dc bench supply 14v charge directly onto battery but seems not drawing anthing.

              Any idea?

Odd MOSFET only on some ASUS x99/x299/z370 motherboards..
              by Timp74
              Hi All,
Could anyone comment on the purpose of the MOSFET circled in red in the attached photo of an ASUS ROG X299 Extreme VRM?

I'm trying to fix an ASUS motherboard(WS x299 SAGE) with a similar VRM where this MOSFET has burnt out along with one of the IR3555m driver chips. From looking at photos of motherboard VRMs on the internet, it seems only some ASUS motherboards have a MOSFET like this. Although I've seen some photos of ASUS z370 boards where it's not populated. The MOSFET is usually a NTMFS4C06N. It has its drain connected to the output of the Vcore VRM, and on...
